Description

This family history file folder contains images and documents on the lives of John J. Hagen and his wife, Hannah Larson, who married on 31 December 1899 in Hillsboro [photos, left] and were life-long residents [see page 72 in Traill County History, Vol. I, below]. Hannah's parents, Hans B. and Johanna Larson [photos, below] were early pioneers in Norway Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory. Hannah's husband, John J. Hagen, came to Hillsboro in 1888 at the age of 17. From profiles in a Public Member Tree in Ancestry.com created by Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner and titled: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree, we know that John J. Hagen was born on 4 November 1849 in Oppland County, Norway, one of nine children born to Anton Knudson Vedumsdallen Hagen and Annie Jonsdatter Lagerud [photo, below]. Hannah Larson was born on 6 December 1945 to parents Hans B. and Johanna Larson on their farm in Norway Township. Hannah was one of seven children. After John and Hannah married in December 1899, they lived and worked in Hillsboro. In the 1910 US Census for the City of Hillsboro, John, age 38, and Hannah, 29, lived on Fifth Street, and John's employment was recorded as "Proprietor" of a "Restaurant". John Hagen operated this restaurant with his wife Hannah's brother, Albert Larson [photo, below]. In 1910, John and Hannah were raising their first three children, Amelia, age 7, Hazel, age 3, and Orlin, age 1 [family tree, below]. From this family tree, note that by 1910, John and Hannah had two other children that died young: Herbert Adolph Hagen at age 6 (born 3 Jan. 1903, died 20 Jul. 1909) and Clarence Orlin Hagen at age 3 (b. 7 Jun. 1906, died 23 Jul. 1909). In this 1910 Census, Hannah declared that she had given birth to 5 children of which 3 were alive, confirming the above. In 1910, John and Hannah were also boarding six lodgers. In the 1920 US Census, John, 48, and Hannah, 39, resided on Sargeant Street in a house they owned, and John was working as a "House painter". In this 1920 Census, collected on 7 January, six children were listed in their home: Hazel, 12; Orlin, 10; Lila, 8; Norman, 7; Bernice, 4; and Amy, 1. No lodgers were recorded in their household in 1920. In the 1930 US Census, John, 58, and Hannah, 49, continue to reside in Hillsboro, where John is recorded as a "Painter" of "Buildings". Six children are listed in their household: Hazel, 22; Lila, 19; Norman, 18; Bernice, 15; Amy, 12; and Merlin, 8. In the 1940 US Census for Hillsboro, John, 68, and Hannah, 59, are still in the City, but John is no longer recorded with an employment. However, their son Orlin Hagen, age 30, is in the household and is employed as a "Salesman" in a "retail grocery store". John and Hannah's son Norman Hagen, 27, is also in the household and is a "Painter", that is, carrying on his father's business. Daughter Amy, age 22, is also at home, and is working as a "Maid" in "Private homes". A granddaughter is also in the household. As recorded in US Census data above, and as shown in their family tree [below], John and Hannah (Larson) Hagen had ten children. The lives of the first three children, Amelia, Herbert and Clarence, are briefly described below; for details see their profiles in Jackie Baumgartner's Ancestry.com Public Member Tree titled: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree. John and Hannah (Larson) Hagen's first of ten children, Amelia Josephine 'Molly' Hagen was born on 5 September 1902, and was raised at her parent's home on First St. in Hillsboro [photo, below]. As noted earlier, Amelia was 7 at the time of the 1910 US Census. At the age of 13, Molly was confirmed into Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Molly Hagen was not in the 1920 US Census because, sadly, she died after "a complication of diseases" at the age of 15 on 7 March 1918 at the hospital in Hillsboro [Town news, Hillsboro Banner, 8 Mar. 1918]. Molly was interred in Hillsboro's Riverside Cemetery [Grave-marker photo, below]. John and Hannah's second child, Herbert Adolph Hagen was born on 3 January 1903. Herbert is shown in a photo taken in about 1908 with his older sister Amelia and younger brother Clarence [below]. As noted earlier, Herbert died at the age of only 6 on 20 July 1909 [local news, Hillsboro Banner, 23 Jul. 1909]. Herbert was interred at Riverside Cemetery [Grave-marker photo, below]. John and Hannah's third child, Clarence Orlin Hagen was born on 7 June 1906. Clarence is shown in a photo taken in about 1908 with his older sister Amelia and older brother Herbert [below]. As noted earlier, Clarence died at the age of only 3 on 23 July 1909, three days after his brother Herbert [local news, Hillsboro Banner, 23 Jul. 1909]. Clarence was interred at Riverside Cemetery [Grave-marker photo, below]. The lives of John and Hannah (larson) Hagen's last seven three children, Hazel, Orlin, Lila, Norman, Bernice, Amy and Merlin [photo, below], are described in separate TCHS Catalogit Family History entries; also see their profiles in Jackie Baumgartner's Ancestry.com Public Member Tree titled: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree. On 31 December 1949, John and Hannah (Larson) Hagen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary [photo, below]. A year and a half later, Hannah (Larson) Hagen passed away, age 70, on 11 June 1951 [ND Death Certif.] at her home in Hillsboro [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 15 Jun. 1951]. After funeral services in Hillsboro, Hannah was interred in Riverside Cemetery [grave-marker photo, below]. About two years after his wife, Hannah, passed, John J. Hagen died, age 81, on 30 April 1953 [ND Death Certif.] at his home in Hillsboro [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 8 May 1953]. John was interred next to Hannah at Hillsboro's Riverside Cemetery [ grave-marker photo, below].
