Description

This family history folder contains photos and documents illustrating the life of Mons Olson Maring and his wife Marie (Lee) Maring. These photos and documents were kindly provided by a great granddaughter, Marilyn (Johnson) Anderson of Zumbrota, MN, who is researching her family history. Mons and Marie (Lee) Maring settled in the NW Qtr. of Section 10 in Blanchard Township in 1882. They farmed land with a relative, Ole Melhouse (or Melhus), as documented in 1885 to 1888 Traill County tax records for Blanchard Township. Mons Olson Maeringen (later Maring) was born on 1 January 1854 at Maeringen Farm in Voss County, Norway, the son of Ole Pederson and Ingeborg Olsdatter Melhus. Mons Maring migrated to America in 1874, and worked as a farm laborer in Goodhue County, MN. As shown on their marriage certificate, Mons Olson Maring married Marie Lee on 3 April 1882 at St John's Church in Northfield, Minesota; they were the first couple to be married in this church. Soon after they married, they moved to Traill County, Dakota Territory, where they farmed land in Section 10 in Blanchard Township with a cousin, Ole Melhouse (Melhus). Mons and Marie (Lee) Maring had five children. Their first son, Bottolf (Bert) Maring was born on 22 January 1883 and baptized at Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland, DT. Second son, Oscar Maring was born in Portland, DT, on 24 May 1885. Mons and Marie's daughter Gemine (Gena) Maring was born on 26 October 1887 in Hillsboro, DT. In 1888, Mons, Marie and family moved to a farm in Holden Township in Goodhue County, MN, where a son Adolph died at, or soon after, birth in 1895, and the next son was born in 1900 and was also named Adoph Maring. The three sons are shown together in a photo taken in about 1905. A photograph shows Gena Maring (Mrs. John G. Johnson) with her mother, Marie (Lee) Maring. Another photograph shows Mons and Marie (Lee ) Maring with three of their grandsons, Floyd, Arnold and Merle Maring. Floyd and Merle are sons of Bert Maring and Arnold is a son of Oscar Maring. Floyd Maring married and settled by Georgetown, MN, and from articles in the Hillsboro Banner in 1969, 1974 and 1975, we know that Floyd Maring maintained family connections to families in Hillsboro. Mons and Marie (Lee) Maring farmed in Holden Township in Goodhue County, MN, until 1927 when they retired and moved to Kenyon, Goodhue County, MN, where they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, after celebrating many earlier anniversaries. Marie (Lee) Maring passed away on 10 January 1944 and about a year later, Mons Maring, passed on 11 April 1945.
