Description

This family history folder has photographs and documents on Ole O. and Jacobina Hovet. Some of these are shown in this Catalogit entry whereas others are included within the file folder at the Plummer House Museum in Hillsboro. Over 400 digital files of Hovet family photographs and documents are included within this folder on a USB Flash Drive. As described in Vol. I of "Yesteryears", a Traill County History (article below), in June 1978, Ole. O. Hovet settled in Stavanger Township in Traill County, DT, with his brothers, Knudt O. Hovet and Thor O. Hovet. The three brothers claimed homesteads near each other: Thor in Section 13, Knudt in Section 23 and Ole in Section 24 (1900 plat map, below). Note that rural Township School No. 1 was located on Thor O. Hovet's land, and a Church is located in Section 13 one mile to the west of Knudt O. Hovet's homestead. Ole O. Hovet was born on 9 May 1851 in Norway and, in February 1891, he married Jacobina Elizabeth Jacobsdr. Jacobson, who was also born in Norway. Jacobina was born to parents Jakob Markussen Vennesland and Olene Elisabeth Olsdatter on 14 July 1872 (based on Norway birth and baptism records, see Risnes Family Tree in Ancestry.com; other places give her birth year as 1871). Ole O. and Jacobina obtained their marriage license in Grand Forks County but were married at the local church in Stavanger Township. In the first years, they lived in a log cabin on their farm in Section 24. Ole O. and Jacobine had eight children, five boys and three girls: Ole John O., Jacob, Betsy, Elizabeth, Bryant, Thomas, Willie and Selma (family tree, below). Ole John Oleson Hovet was born on 27 August 1893 in Traill County, where he was raised on the home farm with his siblings (1900 & 1910 US Census data). With his father passing in 1909, Ole John helped his mother farm (1920 US Census data). By 1930, Ole John, at age 36, had moved to Watford City, ND, where he worked at "odd jobs" (1930 US Census data). At age 47, Ole John Hovet married Esther Stoveland on 28 June 1941 in Polk County (MN marriage record). Esther was born in Hillsboro, ND, on 17 March 1912 (ELCA record). They farmed for T. B. Randolph near Alexander in McKenzie County, ND (1942 Draft Card). Ole John and Esther (Stoveland) Hovet did not have children and retired in Watford City. Ole John Oleson Hovet passed away, age 66, on 28 September 1959 at his home in Watford City, and was buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery (US Find-a-Grave). In 1963, widowed Esther (Stoveland) Hovet married Chester Adams. Esther passed away, age 92, on 7 November 2004 in Watford City, and was buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery. Jacob Oleson Hovet was born on 19 November 1895 in Traill County. He was raised on the home farm in Section 24, Stavanger Township (1900 & 1910 US Census data). In 1917, Jacob married Laura Eken in Buxton, ND. Laura was born on 13 October 1898 in Emerado in Grand Forks County, ND. By 1920 Jacob and Laura had a son, Orlin (b. 26 Nov 1918; d. 20 Jul 2000, Williamsport, PA), while Jacob worked as a farm hand in Ervin Township in Traill County (1920 US Census data). By the 1930 US Census, Jacob and Laura lived in the Village of Buxton and were listed with five more children: LaVerne (b. 18 Jul 1920; m. John T. Murch, 30 Mar 1943, Cass County, ND; d. age 85, 9 Jul 2006, Hillsboro, ND), Margaret (b. 5 Feb 1923, m. Leonard Rohman, d. age 78, 4 Feb 2002), Glenn (b. 7 Nov 1925, d. age 19, WWII 21 Apr 1945 at Okinawa), Richard (b. 27 Dec 1929, m. Elaine Kva, d. age 83, 18 Nov 2013 in Fargo, ND), and a twin, Ruby (b. 27 Dec 1929; d. age 85, 18 Jul 2015 in Oregon). In this 1930 census, no occupation was listed for Jacob. In the 1940 US Census, Jacob and Laura continued to reside in the Village of Buxton and they had another daughter, Phyllis Jean (b. 15 Dec 1937; m. Francis Ruckreigle on 23 Dec 1963 in Clay County, MN; d. age 42, 16 Apr 1980 in Grand forks, ND). In 1940, Jacob's occupation was "Laborer" on a "Community Hall Project". By 1942, Jacob was working for the railroad out of Buxton (US Draft Card). By the 1950 US Census, Jacob and Laura had moved to Grand Forks and were listed with their son Richard (age 20), daughter Phyllis (12), with their daughter Ruby and her husband Elroy A. Latrala, and their two children, twins Jill L. and Jack E. Latrala (b. 21 Dec 1949). In 1950, Jacob was working as a section hand on the railroad. Jacob Oleson Hovet passed away, age 62, on 15 June 1958 at the Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, (ND Death Certif.) Jacob had retired from working for the railroad. Jacob was buried with family at the Hillstead Cemetery in Stavanger Township, Traill County (US Find-a-Grave). Betsy Oleson Hovet was born on 19 July 1896 in Buxton, Traill County, ND. Betsy was raised on her parent's farm in Stavanger Township in Traill County (1900 & 1910 US Census). In 1916, at the age of 20, Betsy married Hjalmar Gunderson, who was born on 12 March 1886 in Norway. Betsy and Hjalmar lived for a while in Watford City in McKenzie County, ND, where Betsy's brother Ole John Hovet lived. In Watford City, Hjalmar and Betsy had two children: Frances Genevieve Gunderson (b. 1916, m. James De Joannes, then m. Oz Salmi, d. 18 Apr 1976, age 59, in Virginia, St. Louis County, MN) and Oscar Hjalmar Gunderson (b. 27 Mar 1918, m. Gloria Solem in 1942, d. 5 Jun 1998 in Duluth, MN). By 1920, Hjalmar and Betsy had moved to farm in Stavanger Township in Traill County. Their next four children were born in Buxton: Olga Georgian Gunderson (b. 17 Mar 1920, m. Wilford John Elkington, d. 27 Aug 1991, age 71, in Duluth, MN), Clarence Allan Gunderson (b. 23 Nov 1921, m. Francis Agnes Wilde, d. 25 Aug 1992, age 70, in Ramsey County, MN), Norman Bernard Gunderson (b. 21 June 1923, m. Helen Vernice Palo in 1943, d. 19 Nov 1961, age 38, in Virginia, St. Louis County, MN), and Betty Lois Gunderson (b. 1925, d. 5 Oct 1932, age Abt. 7, in Virginia, MN). In about 1926, Hjalmar and Betsy moved to Virginia in St. Louis County, MN, where their last two children were born: Dorothy Mae Gunderson (b. 28 Apr 1927, m Mr. Foss, d. 30 Jan 2014, age 85, in Grand Rapids, MN), and Audrey Lucille Gunderson (b. 24 Feb 1929, m. Melvin Martinson on 8 Oct 1945 in Virginia, d. 24 Jun 2009, age 80, in Virginia, MN). Hjalmar Gunderson passed away, age 47, on 6 Sep 1933 in Olmstead Co., MN. Betsy Hovet Gunderson died ag 74 on 15 Mar 1971 in Virginia, MN (US Find-a-Grave). Elizabeth Oleson Hovet was born on 17 November 1898 in Buxton, Traill County, ND. She was raised on her parent's farm in Stavanger Township (1900 & 1910 US Census). At the age of 31, Elizabeth was working in Fargo, ND, as a "Forelady" for a "Printing Company" (1930 US Census). At the age of 32, Elizabeth Hovet had married Benedict Duval on 12 January 1931 in Multnomah, Oregon. After they married, they lived in Milwaukee and worked in a "print Shop" (1940 US Census). Benedict was born on 2 April 1884 in Fargo, ND. At 51, Elizabeth and Benedict continued to reside and work in Milwaukee in a print shop (1950 US Census). They did not have children. Benedict Duval passed away on 11 February 1960, age 75, in Milwaukee, WI, Elizabeth (Hovet) Duval passed away, age 81, on 27 March 1980 in Grand Forks, ND, and they were buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo, ND (US Find-a-Grave). Bryant Hovet was born on 1 November 1900 in Buxton, ND. He was raised on the family farm in Stavanger Township (1910 & 1920 US Census). By 1925, Bryant had moved to Fargo where he roomed in a boarding house with his brother Willie and sister Elizabeth (1925 ND Census). On 9 August 1925, Bryant Hovet married Bertha Torrison at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Tolna, ND (ELC record). Bertha was born on 24 October 1904. By 1930, Bryant and Bertha lived in the Village of Binford in Griggs County, ND, where Bryant was a "Barber" (1930 US Census). Bryant and Bertha Hovet had two children: Marvin Duane Hovet (b. 12 Mar 1926 in Devils Lake, ND; m. Martha Kleven on 29 Mar 1947 in Moorhead, MN; D. 21 Dec 1997 in Wausau, WI) and Shirley Ann Hovet (b. 7 Aug 1932 in Crookston, MN; m. Walter Jones on 5 Sep 1948; d. 11 Jan 2014 in Owatoona, MN). Bryant and Bertha Hovet later moved to McHenry in Foster County, ND, where sadly Bryant passed away at the age of only 35 on 8 January 1936. Bryant Hovet was buried in the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Cemetery by Tolna, ND. Thomas Hovet was born on 16 December 1902 in Buxton, ND. He was raised on the family farm in Stavanger Township, Traill County (1910 & 1920 US Census). by 1930, Thomas was operating the home farm for his widowed mother (1930 US Census). Thomas Hovet married Gena Theoline Knuts of Reynolds, ND, on 16 January 1934 in Polk County, MN (marriage record), and they had moved to a farm in Section 27 in Fisher Township in Polk County, MN (1940 US Census). Gena was born on 9 July 1902 in Reynolds. In the 1950 US Census, Thomas and Gena continued to farm in Fisher Township, and Thomas' mother, Jacobine Hovet, age 78, was living with them. Thomas and Gena did not have children. Thomas Hovet passed away, age 83, on 11 December 1986 in a Grand Forks hospital (ND Death Certif.) and was buried in the Fisher Lutheran Church Cemetery. Gena lived to the age of 98, passing away on 29 September 200 in Crookston, MN. Gena was buried next to Thomas in the Fisher Lutheran Cemetery (US Find-a-Grave). William "Willie' Hovet was born on 13 February 1905 in Buxton, Traill County, ND. He was raised on the family farm in Stavanger Township with his parents and siblings (1920 & 1920 US Census). By 1925, Willie had moved to Fargo and roomed in a boarding house with his brother Bryant and sister Elizabeth (1925 US Census). On 13 May 1928, Willie Hovet, age 23, married Ethel Krogen, age 20, in Moorhead, Clay County, MN (marriage record), where they lived. By 1940, Willie and Ethel lived on S. Ash St. in Crookston, MN (1940 US Census). Willie was employed as a barber. Willie and Ethel had two children listed with them in 1940: William Hovet Jr (age 10, b. 29 Oct 1929 in Moorhead, MN; m. Darlene M Fieman in 1947; d. 23 Jan 2016 in Rochester, MN) and Jerry Hovet (age 7, b. 2 May 1932 in Crookston; m. Marvel Wick on 19 June 1953 in Polk County, MN; d. 19 Jul 1978 in Los Angeles, CA). In the 1950 Census, Willie, age 45, continue to work as a barber. Ethel, age 41, was working as a waitress in a restaurant. Their son, Jerry, age 17, was at their home on Ash St. Willie Hovet lived to the age of 80, passing away on 28 May 1985 in Crookston. Ethel (Krogen) Hovet lived to the age of 84, passing away on 13 Oct 1992 in Crookston. Willie and Ethel were interred at the Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston. Selma Hovet was born on 19 July 1907 in Buxton, Traill County, ND. She was raised on the family farm in Stavanger Township in Traill County (1910, 1920 & 1930 US Census). In about 1930, Selma Hovet married a Mr. Corey and they had a daughter Lorraine C. who was 9 years old in the 1940 US Census. But, in the 1940 US Census, Selma Hovet was married to Johnnie Telmer Knudson, who farmed in Stavanger Township with his father, Carl Knutson. Thelma Hovet Corey had married Johnnie Knutson on 3 April 1939 in Polk County, MN (marriage record). In the 1950 US Census, Johnnie (age 40) and Selma (age 42) continued to farm in Stavanger Township. A son Jerome Hovet, age 8, was listed with them in the 1950 US Census. In 1955, a Grand Forks City directory listed Johnnie and Selma as living on N 6th St, with Johnnie working as a maintenance-man at UND. Selma (Hovet) Knutson lived to the age of 73, passing away on 29 January 1981 in Grand Forks. Selma's husband, Johnnie Knutson lived to the age of 79, passing away on 25 June 1988 in Polk County, MN. Johnnie and Selma were buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Forks. Ole O. Hovet passed away on 20 June 1909 and was buried in the Hillstead Cemetery located in the SE Qtr. of Section 24 in Stavanger Township east of Buxton, ND (grave monument & marker, below). After Her husband Ole O. Hovet's passing in 1909, Jacobina (Markuson) Hovet remained on the home farm in Stavanger Township and continued the farming operation with the help of her sons. At the time of the 1950 US Census, Jacobina was living with her son Thomas and family on a farm by Fisher, MN. Jacobina (Markuson) Hovet died on 3 February 1955 in Grand Forks and a funeral was held at the Fisher Lutheran Church (Hillsboro Banner news). Jacobine was interred in the Hillstead Cemetery, east of Buxton, ND (grave-marker, below)
