This family history folder briefly describes the life of Knudt Oleson and Julia (Jorgensdatter) Hovet (photo), and their eight children. It includes a number of photographs and documents, many of which are included below in this Catalogit entry while others are included within the folder on file at the Plummer House Museum in Hillsboro. A USB Flash Drive with digital files of family photographs and documents is included in this folder.
Knudt was born on 29 July 1848 on the Hovet Farm in Aust-Agder County, Norway, one of 13 children born to Olav Knutson and Birgit (Torsdotter-Borman) Hovet (Neuman Family Tree, Ancestry.com). Julia or Jorund Jorgensdr Bormann was born on 13 May 1949 on the Brokke Farm in Aust-Agder County, Norway, to parents Jorgen Knudsen and Targjend Olasdatter Nomeland. Knudt and Julia likely knew each other in Norway and met again in Iowa when Julia's parent came to Winneshiek County in 1861 and Knudt's parent also came to Winneshiek County in 1863. Knudt and Julia married on 7 November 1868 in the Big Canoe Lutheran Church in Winneshiek County.
Knudt Oleson and Julia (Jorgensdr.) Hovet had eight children (family tree, below). Their first three, Ole K, John K. and Betsy K. Hovet were born in Winneshiek County, IA. But by 1874, Knudt and Julia had moved their family to Spring Grove, MN, as evident by their next two children, Tilda and Thomas Hovet, being born in Spring Grove. Then, in 1978 Knudt and Julia moved to E. Buxton Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory, with their last three children, Knut K., Albert K. and Engeborg K. Hovet, being born in Buxton. Knudt and Julia's homestead was in the northeast quarter of section 23 (1900 plat map, below). Their neighbors were Knudt's brothers, Ole O. Hovet and Thor O. Hovet.
Knudt O. and Julia Hovet had eight children: Ole K., John K., Betsy K., Tilda, Thomas K., Knut K., Albert K. and Engeborg K; their lives are briefly described as follows:
Ole Knutson Hovet was born as Ole Oleson on 31 July 1869 in Winneshiek County, Iowa. For the life of Ole K. Hovet, and his wife Ostina (Halvorson) Hovet, see Catalogit entry 2024.499.1.
John or Jorgen Knutson Hovet was born in December 1872 in Winneshiek County, IA (Neumann Family Tree, Ancestry). John K. came to settle in Traill County, DT, with his parents and siblings in 1878, and in the 1880 US Census for Traill County (below), John K. was eight years old. At the age of 19, on 13 December 1893, John K. Hovet married his sweetheart Maggie Halvorson Holto, age 17, who also came from Winneshiek County, Iowa. Maggie was born on 22 April 1875. John K. and Maggie Hovet farmed in Belmont Township and had nine children in Traill County: Knut Hovet (b. 26 Nov 1895; d. age 4, 16 Aug 1900), Josie Hovet (b. 30 Jan 1898; d. age 47, 18 Jan 1945), Thelma Hovet (b. 14 Feb 1900; m. John K died at the age of 48 in July 1921 in Traill County. Maggie (Holts) Hovet lived another 40 years, passing away on 14 December 1961 in Grand forks, ND.
Bergit 'Betsy' K. Hovet was born on 3 March 1873 in Hesper Township in Winneshiek, IA (Neumann Family Tree, Ancestry), and baptized on 23 March 1873 in the Big Canoe Lutheran Chruch by Decorah, IA (ELCA record). Betsy came to settle in Traill County, DT, with his parents and siblings in 1878, and was age eight in the 1880 US Census for Traill County (below). At the time of the 1900 US Census (below), Betsy was 27 and remained on the home farm in Stavanger Township. Six years after this 1900 Census, Betsy K. Hovet, age 33, married Arne Arneson, age 34, on 27 October 1906 in Grand Forks (ND marriage record). Arne was born in about 1871 in Baudette, MN, to parents Hans and Siri Hovet. In the 1880 US Census for Traill County, Arne was age 9 and was with his parents and an older sister, Inger (11) and younger brothers Even (7), Gilbert (6), Johan (3) and Loris (1). In 1919, Betsy Arneson was summoned to a Traill County court hearing to settle the estate of her father, Knudt O. Hovet after his passing in 1916 (Hillsboro Banner, 18 April 1919). Betsy's brother, John K. Hovet was administrator for the estate. No further records for Betsy K. (Hovet) Arneson were found.
Targerd 'Tilda' K. Hovet was born on 18 Nov 1874 in Spring Grove, Houston County, MN (Neumann Family Tree, Ancestry). At age three, Tilda moved to Traill County, DT, with her parents and siblings in 1878, and was age five at the time of the 1880 US Census for Traill County (below). In the 1885 ND Census for Buxton/Belmont Townships in Traill County, Tilda was listed as age 9. In the 1900 US Census, Tilda was no longer listed with her parents and siblings on the home farm--where was Tilda? From an Ancestry Nelson Family Tree, we know that Tilda Hovet married Gustav M. Lucken (or Locken, Lokken) on 26 Jun 1896 in Grand Forks (ND marriage license). By the 1900 US Census for Buxton Township, Gustav and Tilda had two children. Gustav's occupation was recorded as "Well digger". Gustav and Tilda Lucken had a total of eight children: Melvin (b. 4 Apr 1897 in Buxton; m. Esther Locker; d. age 58, 20 Jan 1955 in Grand Forks); Gladys (b. 20 Nov 1898 in Buxton; d. age 90, 5 Jul 1989, Cedar Falls, IA); Knute (b. 26 Feb 1901 in Buxton; d. age 38, 19 Jan 1940 in Mayville, ND); Julia (b. 1903 in Buxton; d. age 63, 18 Feb 1966 in Bakersfield, CA); Bernice (b. 21 Apr 1905 in Buxton; m. Tilda (Hovet) Lucken only lived to the age of 46, passing away on 20 August 1921 in Grand Forks, ND. Gustav died four years later, age 64, on 20 September 1925 in Traill County. Gustav and Tilda Locken were interred in the Hillstead Cemetery located in Stavanger Township in Traill County.
Thomas 'Thom' Knutson Hovet was born on 16 July 1876 in Spring Grove, Houston County, MN (Neumann Family Tree, Ancestry). Thomas K. came to settle in Traill County, DT, with his parents and siblings in 1878. Thomas was three years old in the 1880 US Census for Traill County (below) and he was eight in the 1885 ND Census for Traill County. In 1900, Thomas is no longer in the US Census with Knudt K. and Julia Hovet's family. Where is Thomas? Thomas got married! At the age of 24, Thomas K. Hovet married Thea T. Nomeland on 26 June 1901 in Polk County, MN (Ancestry, Diane Trachy Kolstad Family Tree). Thea was born on 6 September 1882 in Traill County to parents Gunder and Ingebor (Hovet) Nomeland. Interestingly, Ingebor is a sister to Knudt Hovet, Thomas' father, hence Thomas and Thea were first cousins. Thomas and Thea settled in Saint Hilaire in Pennington County, MN, where Thomas was employed as a "Lumberman" (1910 US Census). Saint Hilaire is located about 8 miles south of Thief River Falls. Thomas and Thea had five children: Esther (b. 27 Dec 1901; m. Henry Horsager on 26 May 1925 in Oakes, ND; d. age 85, on 30 Nov 1987), Frances (b. 2 Aug 1904; m. Oscar Gigstad on 8 May 1926 in St. Hilaire; d. age 95, on 26 Apr 2000 in Arden Hills, MN); Kenard (b. 10 May 1907; m. Betty Weyer on 22 Sep 1930 in Breckenridge, MN; d. age 85, 7 Aug 1992 in Little Falls, MN); Tom B. (b. 28 Feb 1910; m. Mabel Merkens on 19 Nov 1930 in Ada, MN; d. age 84, 22 Apr 1994 in Anoka, MN), and Richard (b. 6 Sep 1912; d. age 1, 15 Sep 1913 in St Hilaire). When Thomas registered for the WWI draft on 12 September 1918, he was living with his family at St. Hilaire in Pennington County, MN, and was employed as an "Elevator man" for "Farmers Cooperative Elevator Co." in St Hilaire (1920 US Census). Thomas K. Hovet only lived to the age of 45, passing away on 16 January 1922 in St. Hilaire, where he was buried in the cemetery (US find-a-Grave). About three years after Thomas' passing, Thea (Nomeland) Hovet married Knute Anderson Kolstad on 18 April 1925 in St. Hilaire. Knute and Thea had two children in St. Hilaire: Harold Kolstad (b. 14 Oct 1925; m. Verneal Elsenpeter on 8 Aug 1947 in Minneapolis; d. age 91, 5 Sept 2017 in Virginia, MN); and Hazel (b. 19 Jan 1932; d. age 3 days, 22 Jan 1932). Knute died, age 82, on 14 April 1954 in St. Hilaire.
