This family history folder contains documents and photographs on the lives of Thor Oleson and Isabel (Jorgensdr. Nomland) Hovet and their five children (photo), who were early settlers in E. Buxton (Stavanger) Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory.
Thor O. Hovet and Isabel (or Ingeborg) Jorgensdr. Nomland married in Norway on 10 April 1871. Thor O. was born on 20 October 1844 on the Hovet Farm in Aust-Agder County, Norway. Isabel was born on 16 November 1850 on the Nomland Farm in Aust-Agder County, Norway. In about 1872, Thor O. and Isabel migrated to Winneshiek County, Iowa, where Thor's parents, Olav K. and Birgit (Torsdr.) Hovet had settled in 1863, along with other family. Thor O. and Isabel had two sons, Ole T. and John T. Hovet, in Iowa.
In June 1978, Thor O. Hovet settled in E. Buxton (later Stavanger) Township in Traill County, DT, with his brothers, Knudt O. Hovet and Ole O. Hovet (see article in Vol. I of "Yesteryears", a Traill County History. The three brothers claimed homesteads near each other. Thor O., Isabel and boys settled in a log cabin in Section 13, while Thor's brother Knudt O. settled in Section 23 and brother Ole O. in Section 24 (1900 plat map, below). Note that rural E. Buxton Township School No. 1 was located in the southwest corner of Thor O. Hovet's land. Thor O. and Isabel Hovet, and Knud O. and Julia Hovet, were 1899 charter members of the Hylestad Church and Cemetery (sign, below)
Thor O. and Isabel Hovet had five children: Ole T., John T., Betsy T., Tilda T. and Theodore T. Hovet (family tree, below). For another Thor and Isabel Hovet family tree that includes photographs, see the Roger Hovet family tree available in Ancestry.com.
Ole Thorson Hovet was born on 3 March 1872 in Hesper Township in Winneshiek County, IA. Ole T. came with his parents to Traill County, DT, in 1878. There he met Anna Jermeland, whose parents had also settled in Traill County in 1893. Ole T. and Anna were married on 11 November 1894 at the local Evangelical Church (wedding photo, below). Ole Thorson and Anna Hovet had ten children in Traill County (Vol. I, Traill County History book). Nine lived to adulthood (photo, below), with the youngest, Adelaide dying at the age of 3 months. Ole T and Anna Hovet's ten children included: Thor Olson Hovet (b. 25 Dec 1895; m. Edith Thompson in 1922 in Traill County; d. age 58, 20 Aug 1954 in Bemidji, MN), Bertha O. Hovet (b. 27 Apr 1897; m. Knut Knutson in about 1915 in Traill County; d. age 87, Jun 1984 in Fargo, ND), Engeborg O. Hovet (b. 8 Nov 1898 in Fargo; m. Alfred Koppang in 1924, and Ted Amb in 1935; d. age 84, 7 Jul 1983 in Traill County), Olina Hovet (b. 1 Apr 1900 in Buxton; m. Joe Amb in about 1933; d. age 98, 5 Dec 1998 in Fargo, ND), Alfred O. Hovet (b. 12 Nov 1901 in Buxton; m. Julia Brustad on 10 Oct 1936 in Polk County, MN; d. age 83, 28 Feb 1985 in Mayville, ND), Palmer Hovet (b. 29 Mar 1904 in Buxton; m. Myrtle Dokken in about 1940; d. age 82, 9 Mar 1987 in Reynolds, ND), Edwin Hovet (b. 31 Aug 1907 in Buxton; d. age 77, 4 Apr 1985 in Portland, ND), Selmer Hovet (b. 5 Aug 1909 in Buxton; m. Gena Leedahl in 21 Jun 1943 in Clay County, MN; d. age 64, 16 Feb 1974 in Seattle, WA), Milfred Hovet (b. 7 Apr 1912 in Buxton; m. Anna Nygaard in Buxton; d. age 95, 29 Jul 1967 in Reynolds, ND), and Adelaide O. Hovet (b. 25 Aug 1915 in Buxton; d. age 3 months, 5 Dec 1915 in Buxton). Ole Thorson Hovet only lived to the age of 45, dying on 25 October 1917 in Grand Forks, ND. After Ole T. Hovet's passing, we know that Anna remained on the farm, and had a large barn built in 1919 (Stavanger news, 11 July 1919, Hillsboro Banner). Anna (Jermeland) Hovet lived about another 30 years after Ole T., passing away at age 64 on 14 October 1936 in Buxton. Ole Thorson and Anna Hovet were interred in the Hillstead Cemetery by Buxton, ND.
John Thorson Hovet was born was born on 29 January 1875 in Hesper Township in Winneshiek County, IA. In 1878 he moved with his parent to a farm in E. Buxton (Stavanger) Township in Traill County, ND. In the 1880 US Census for E. Buxton Township, John T. was 5 years old. By the time of the 1900 US Census, John T. Hovet was no longer with his parents in Section 13 because he had homesteaded a farm in the southeast quarter of Section 10 in E. Buxton (later Stavanger) Township in Traill County (1900 plat map, below). On 14 December 1900, John T. Hovet, age 25, married Magdalena 'Lena' Jormeland, age 19, at the United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND (ELCA marriage Record). By the time of the 1910 US Census, John T. and Lena Hovet had five children, including twins (photo, below), Bernice (b. 5 Jan 1902 in Buxton; m. Elbin Hovet on 14 Feb 1928; d. age 81, 29 Dec 1983 in Hillsboro, ND) and Esther (b. 5 Jan 1902 in Buxton; m. Melvin Locken on 4 Jun 1933; d. age 67, 20 Jan 1969 in Traill County, ND). They also had a daughter Tressie Hovet (Roger Hovet Family Tree, Ancestry), who sadly died at the age of 14 months (b. 8 Jan 1905; d. 30 Mar 1906). Then John T. and Lena had two sons, Tilmer Hovet (b. 1 Mar 1907 in Buxton; d. age 55, 22 Jul 1962 in Traill County, ND) and Ordean Hovet (b. 30 Jan 1910 in Buxton; d. age 54, 26 Jan 1965 in Traill County, ND). By the time of the 1915 ND Census, John T. and Lena had their last child, a daughter Evelyn Hovet (b. 8 May 1915 in Buxton; m. Ervin B. Hedde on 14 Sep 1940 in Buxton; d. age 72, 23 Aug 1987 in Buxton). In the 1920 US Census and 1925 ND Census, John T. and Lena Hovet continued to farm in Stavanger Township and had their five surviving children at home. John T. Hovet passed away, age 52, on 25 November 1927, at home after a short illness (Buxton news, 2 December 1927, Hillsboro Banner). Lena (Jormeland) Hovet lived to the age of 71, passing away on 7 May 1952 at a hospital in Grand Forks, ND (Buxton news, 16 May 1952, Hillsboro Banner). John T. and Lena Hovet were interred at the Hillstead Cemetery, rural Buxton.
Berit 'Betsy' T. Hovet was born was born on 23 July 1881 in E. Buxton Township after her parents had moved from Iowa to Traill County, ND. Betsy T. was raised on the family farm in Section 13 and went to the nearby School No. 1 (see 1900 plat map). At age 25, Betsy T. Hovet (photo, below) married Martin Tveden, age 25, on 30 July 1906 in Grand Forks (ND Marriage Certif.). Martin was born on 1 October 1881 by Buxton, ND. By the 1910 US Census, Martin and Betsy Tveden were farming in Montrose Township in Bottineau County, ND. Also by 1910, they had two sons: Oscar Tveden (b. 17 May 1907; d. 28 Jul 1984 in Thompson, ND), and Theodore Tveden (b. 15 Mar 1909 in Maxbass, ND; m. Edna Wolla on 13 Apr 1941 in Williston, ND; d. 15 Feb 1991 in Williston). In the 1920 US Census, Martin and Betsy now farmed in Renville Township in Bottineau County. In addition to their two sons, they now had a daughter, Bernice Tveden (b. 4 Jun 1916 in Max Bass in Bottineau County, ND; m. Berto Hovet in 1938; d. age 64, 8 Dec 1980 in Hillsboro, ND). In 1922, Martin and Betsy Hovet moved to a farm in Stavanger Township in Traill County by Reynolds, ND, where they farmed until Martin Hovet passed away, age 71, on 20 August 1953 at a hospital in Grand Forks, ND (obit, 4 Sep 1953, Hillsboro Banner). Betsy (Hovet) Tveden had passed away six months earlier, age 71, on 6 February 1953 in Hillsboro, ND. Martin and Betsy were interred in Memorial Park South Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND (US Find-a-Grave info).
Thilda 'Tilda' T. Hovet was born on 23 August 1886 in E. Buxton Township (later Stavanger) in Traill County, ND. Tilda T. grew up on her parent's farm and attended the nearby rural School No. 1 (see 1900 plat map). In the 1900 US Census for E. Buxton Township, Tilda was 13 years old. In the 1910 US Census for Stavanger Township, Tilda was 23 and remained on the home farm. By the time of the 1920 US Census taken in January in Stavanger Township, Tilda Hovet had married Ole Knutson in about 1919 and they were farming rented land. A few months later, Ole and Tilda had a daughter Georgina Knutson (b. 27 April 1920 in Traill County; m. Clarence B. Aune on 1 Jun 1947; d. age 80, 17 Apr 2001 in Fargo, ND). Ole Knutson was born on 23 August 1886 in Stavanger Township to parents Germund and Guro Knutson. Unfortunately, Ole only lived to the age of 41, passing away on 20 June 1928. Thus, in the 1930 US Census for Stavanger Township, Tilda (Hovet) Knutson was recorded as widowed at age 43, and the head of the farm with her daughter Georgina. A farm laborer, Halvor Espetviet, age 41, was also listed on the farm. By the 1940 US Census, Tilda (Hovet) Knutson, age 53, had married the widower, Halvor Hedde, age 53. Halvor's wife, Gertie (Arneson) Hedde had died at the age of 24. Halvor and Hilda farmed in Stavanger Township. Halvor's son, Ervin Hedde, age 25, lived with them, as did Tilda's daughter, Georgina Knutson, age 20. Of interest is that in September 1940, Ervin Hedde married Georgina's first cousin, Evelyn Hovet. By the 1950 US Census, Halvor Hedde was widowed and lived in the household of his nephew, Elmer Hovet, in the Village of Buxton. Elmer's parents, Albert and Tone (Hedde) Hovet, were also in the household. Tilda (Hovet) Hedde passed away, age 58, on 22 May 1945 in the Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks (ND Death Certif). Halvor Hedde lived another 15 years, passing away in 1960. He was buried in the Salem Cemetery located in Bingam Township in Traill County (US Find-a-Grave).
Theodore T. Hovet was the last child born to Thor and Isabel. He was born on the home farm in E. Buxton Township (later Stavanger) in Traill County, ND, on 11 February 1890. Theodore T. grew up on home farm in Section 13 (see 1900 plat map), while attending the nearby township school No. 1. Theodore was 10 years old in the 1900 US Census and he was 20 in the 1910 US Census where he was recorded as a "laborer" to help his father farm. By the time of the 1920 US Census, Theodore was 30 and listed as the "Head" of the household as his father, Thor O., was now 74 years old and his mother, Isabel, was 69. Further, Theodore was recorded as having a wife. On 6 June 1917, Theodore T. Hovet married Gladys Locken in Polk County, MN. Gladys was born on 20 November 1898 to parents Gustave and Tilda (Knutsdr.) Locken. In the 1930 US Census and the 1940 US Census, Theodore and Gladys continued to farm in Stavanger Township. By 1940 they had their six children, including Irene Theoline Hovet (b.2 Feb 1920 in Grand Forks, ND; m. John E. Mulvey on 5 Apr 1944 in Coeur d'Alene, ID; d. age 73, 30 Jul 1993 in Los Angeles, CA, and buried in Fairmont Memorial Park in Spokane, WA), Lloyd Clifton Hovet (b. 17 May 1922 in Stavanger, Traill County, ND; m. Violet Nelson in about 1948 in Ramsey County, MN; d. age 61, 11 Aug 1983 in Ramsey County, MN, and buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Minneapolis, MN), Clarice M. Hovet (b. 22 Jan 1925 iin Stavanger, Traill County, ND; d. age 57, 29 Jan 1982 in Grand Forks, ND, and buried in Hillstead Cemetery, Buxton, ND), Hazel Jeanette Hovet (b. 31 Dec 1926 in Stavanger, Traill County, ND; m. Eugene E. Bertsch on 18 Oct 1947 in Grand Forks, ND; d. age 58, 26 Oct 1985 in Grand Forks, ND), John Gordon Hovet (b. 26 Jan 1930 in Stavanger, Traill County, ND; m. Vivian Manning on 22 Jan 1963 in San Diego, CA; d. age 82 on 15 May 2012 in Moorhead, MN, and buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN), and Theodore Richard Hovet (b. 7 Mar 1935 in Stavanger, Traill County, ND; m. Grace Ann O'Neill on 3 Aug 1963 in Ramsey County, MN; d. age 74, 18 Jul 2009 in London, England, and buried in Hillstead Cemetery, Buxton, ND). In the 1950 US Census, Theodore (age 60) and Gladys (51) resided in the Village of Buxton, with two of their sons, John Hovet (20) and Theodore (15). The son's occupations were listed as "Farm helper" indicating that they were still helping their father, Theodore Sr., farm out in Stavanger Township. The year after the 1950 US Census, Theodore Hovet died unexpectedly of a heart attack while hauling grain, age 61, on 12 September 1951 (Obit, Hillsboro Banner, 21 Sep 1951). After her husband's passing, Gladys continued to reside in the Village of Buxton for many years, but then moved to Cedar Falls, IA, to be with her son, Dr. Ted Hovet, daughter-in-law, Dr. Grace Hovet, and grandson, Ted Jr., before eventually moving into a nursing home in Cedar Falls where Gladys (Locken) Hovet passed away, age 90, on 5 July 1989 (Obit, Hillsboro Banner, 17 July 1989). Theodore and Gladys were interred in the Hillstead Cemetery, Buxton, ND.
Thor O. and Isabel Hovet farmed in Section 13 in Stavanger Township for many years (1880, 1900 & 1910 US Census data). By the time of the 1920 US Census, Thor, age 74, and Isabel, 69, remained on their farm, but their son Theodore and his wife Gladys were now listed as "Head" of the household. On 10 April 1921, Thor and Isable celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Stavanger Township (news, Hillsboro Banner, 15 April 1921, & grave-marker below). About six months later, Isabel (Nomland) Hovet suddenly passed away on 6 September 1921 (news, 9 Sep 1921, Hillsboro Banner, below). About seven years later, in late December 1928, Thor O. Hovet also passed away (tombstone, below). Thor's grave-marker (below) dates his death in 1928. From news items in the Hillsboro Banner weekly newspaper, we know that it was towards the end of December 1928, although the exact date is as yet unknown. Thor O. and Isabel were interred in the Hillstead Cemetery east of Buxton, ND in Stavanger Township.Acquisition
