Description

This photograph is from the extensive Hovet Collection, which in 1987 was donated to the TCHS Plummer House Museum by George Olson, of Charles, ND. George was the husband of Thelma (Hovet) Olson, the only daughter of Stina (Halvorson) Hovet, long-time resident of Hillsboro, ND. The donation card (Number AP II 257) describes the photo as "Man's hat on person--picture kitty-corner". On the back of this photo is written "Cousin Georgine Bry Harvey". We know that a Georgiana Frovig married Ole Brye on 27 October 1898, and they farmed near Harvey in Wells County, ND [1910 & 1920 US Census data]. By 1920, Ole and Georgine Brye had eight children. When Ole passed away, age 96, in April 1965 in Silverton, Oregon, his obituary (below) noted that Ole and Georgine's son William lived in Harvey, ND. Georgine (Frovig) Brye had passed away a year earlier in 1964. Although the photograph of "Man's hat on person" was written on the back with "Cousin Georgine Bry, Harvey", there is no evident family connection to the Hovet families of Traill and Grand Forks Counties. Georgine Frovig's parents were Johannes and Olava (Brustad) Frovig. There are Brustad families in Traill County, but there is no evident connection of these families to Olava Brustad of Harvey or to Stina (Halvorson) Hovet, who had the many photographs in the Hovet Collection donated by son--in-law, George Olson. If anyone knows of a cousin connection of Georgina (Frovig) Brye to Stina (Halvorson) Hovet, please let us know. A second photograph (below) of a young man was paired with the "Man's hat on Person" photograph. The style and framing of both photographs are very similar. The second photo was taken at C. E. Fuller studio in Northwood, ND, hence, the "Man's hat on Person" photograph was also likely taken at Northwood prior to 1900 when Photographer C. E. Fuller moved his studio to Hillsboro, ND.
