2024.566.1Description
The first homesteader in what became Wold Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory, was Nels Hanson Wold. As described on page 6 (copy below) in a book "Looking Back" published in 1989 by his grandson, Darwood Drake, Nels Wold was born on 9 February 1854 in Skeberg, Smaalenene, Norway. At the age of 16, Nels came to America in 1872 and first settled in Wisconsin. In 1878 he came to Fargo and then north to Traill County where he homesteaded north of what became Cummings, ND, in Section 1 of what was first Logan Township and then Wold Township (see 1900 map).
On 12 July 1884, Nels Wold married Ingeborg Andrew. They resided in a log and sod cabin on the homestead and had seven children: Jennie, Ida, Albert, Harvey, Marie (mother to Darwood Drake), Peter and Irene Wold.
In 1910, Jennie and Ida Wold took up homestead claims in Middlecreek Township in McKenzie County, ND. Soon after, Marie Wold followed her sisters and also homesteaded land in Middlecreek Township.
In 1913, Marie Wold married Frank Drake, who had a son, Darwood Drake on 6 July 1915 (see page 7 from Looking Back, below). Jennie Wold had previously married Carl Anderson. Marie (Wold) Drake and Jennie (Wold) Anderson are shown in a 1950s photo from "Looking Back" by Darwood Drake (below).
Nels H. Wold died in 1910 and his wife Ingeborg (Andrew) Wold died in 1940.
A brief description of the Nels Wold family was included on page 206 in "Yesteryears", Traill Conty History, Vol. I (below).Acquisition
