Context

Hand-Carved Collection of 26 Dogs & a Skunk by Hobo McGee. The story goes that a Hobo named McGee lived in an area just outside of Hillsboro referred to as Hobo Town (in the area Woodland Park is now located in Hillsboro). McGee started trading hand carved dogs to a local store owner for goods. McGee's first items were rather primitive. The store owner gave McGee a book with photos of different dog breeds and his carvings became more accurate and of better quality. These items were given to the Cass County Historical Society by Bud Way, but were then returned and then given to the Traill County Historical Society in 1990.
