Description

This family history folder contains information on lives of Ole Thorson and Anna (Jormeland) Hovet. Information and photographs are available in Ancestry.com Public Member Trees by Roger Hovet and the Diane-Trachy-Kolstad Family Tree. Ole Thorson and Anna Hovet's great granddaughter, Jane (Zahnow) Cox also kindly provided information and photographs. Other information was available in Traill County history books and newspapers. Ole Thorson Hovet was born on 3 March 1872 in Hesper Township in Winneshiek County, IA, the first child of five born to parents Thor Oleson and Ingeborg (Nomland) Hovet (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2024.516.1). Ole T. came with his parents to Traill County, DT, in 1878, where they settled in East Buxton (later named Stavanger) Township. Ole Thorson Hovert met neighbor Anna Jormeland, whose parents had settled in Traill County in 1893. Ole Thorson and Anna were married on 11 November 1894 at the local Hylstad Evangelical Church (wedding photo, left). Anna Jormeland was born on 30 August 1872 in Hjelmeland, Rogaland, Norway. Ole Thorson and Anna settled on a 160-acre farm located in the SW Qtr. of Sect. 10 in East Buston Township (1900 map, below). Their farm was located near other Hovet family, such as Ole Thorson's brother, John Thorson Hovet. As described on page 90 in the Traill County History book, Vol. I (below), Ole Thorson and Anna Hovet had ten children in Traill County. Nine lived to adulthood (photo, below), with the youngest, Adelaide dying at the age of 3 months. Ole Thorson and Anna Hovet's ten children included: Thor Olson Hovet (b. 25 Dec 1895; m. Edith Thompson in 1922 in Traill County; d. age 58, 20 Aug 1954 in Bemidji, MN), Bertha O. Hovet (b. 27 Apr 1897; m. Knut Knutson in about 1915 in Traill County; d. age 87, Jun 1984 in Fargo, ND), Engeborg O. Hovet (b. 8 Nov 1898 in Fargo; m. Alfred Koppang in 1924, and Ted Amb in 1935; d. age 84, 7 Jul 1983 in Traill County), Olina Hovet (b. 1 Apr 1900 in Buxton; m. Joe Amb in about 1933; d. age 98, 5 Dec 1998 in Fargo, ND), Alfred O. Hovet (b. 12 Nov 1901 in Buxton; m. Julia Brustad on 10 Oct 1936 in Polk County, MN; d. age 83, 28 Feb 1985 in Mayville, ND), Palmer Hovet (b. 29 Mar 1904 in Buxton; m. Myrtle Dokken in about 1940; d. age 82, 9 Mar 1987 in Reynolds, ND), Edwin Hovet (b. 31 Aug 1907 in Buxton; d. age 77, 4 Apr 1985 in Portland, ND), Selmer Hovet (b. 5 Aug 1909 in Buxton; m. Gena Leedahl in 21 Jun 1943 in Clay County, MN; d. age 64, 16 Feb 1974 in Seattle, WA), Milfred Hovet (b. 7 Apr 1912 in Buxton; m. Anna Nygaard in Buxton; d. age 95, 29 Jul 1967 in Reynolds, ND), and Adelaide O. Hovet (b. 25 Aug 1915 in Buxton; d. age 3 months, 5 Dec 1915 in Buxton). Ole Thorson Hovet only lived to the age of 45, dying on 25 October 1917 in Grand Forks, ND [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 2 Nov. 1917, below]. Ole T. was interred at the Hyllstad Cemetery located in Stavanger Township [grave-marker, below]. After Ole Thorson Hovet's passing, we know that Anna, as young woman (photo, below), remained on the home farm, and had a large barn built in 1919 (Stavanger news, 11 July 1919, Hillsboro Banner). In the 1930 US Census for Stavanger Township, Anna remained the head of household and still had four children at home: Olina, Alfred, Edwin and Milfred. Anna (Jormeland) Hovet lived about another 30 years after Ole Thorson Hovet died. Anna passed away at age 64 on 14 October 1936 in Buxton [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 23 Oct. 1936, below]. Anna (Jormeland) Hovet was interred in the Hylestad Cemetery by Buxton, ND [grave-marker, below].
