Immanuel Church, 40th year, 1875 - 1915. In 1871, the families of Carl Merganthal, Carl Hausmann, Heinrich Groehnke and Frederich Kuhlman worshiped together in their homes. They were occasionally served by Pastor Harstad, a Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran pastor. In 1875, these and other families of German descent east of Hillsboro, formally organized the Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Church, and a Chruch building, and parsonage were built (see photos). The Church was constructed on land donated by Henry Groehnke and the Parsonage was across the road on land donated by Carl Merganthal, about three miles east of Hillsboro in Section 34 of Eldorado Township, Traill County, Dakota Territory.
As shown in a photograph, early Church Officials included (standing, left to right): Wm. Heinrich Groehnke, Fredrich Kuhlmann, Geo. Karl Hausmann, F. Otto, and (sitting, left to right): Wm. Meyer, G. Jahnke, Theo. Beltz, W. F. Mergenthal. On Thanksgiving Day, 27 November 1930, Immanuel Lutheran began joint services with St John Lutheran, located southwest of Hillsboro in Bohnsack Township. In July 1935, St John Lutheran began the purchase of the church building of the Lutheran Free Church located in the city of Hillsboro. This purchase was completed i 1936 and St John Lutheran relocated from Bohnsack Township to Hillsboro. In 1940, the St John congregation purchased the former A. G. Foogman residence as a parsonage. In 1947, the Immanuel Lutheran congregation joined the St. John Lutheran congregation in Hillsboro. The Immanual Lutheran cemetery continues to be maintained east of Hillsboro.Cataloged By
