2022.726.1Description
This file contains information about the family of John (Johann) and Maria (Heineke) Bohnsack who came to Dakota Territory in 1878. Bohnsack Township was named in honor of this pioneering family.
The life of John Bohnsack is also described on many of the 37-pages of a family history document written by Walt Bohnsack (see Walt Bohnsack's Catalogit entry). These pages describe their German heritage, and Walt's boyhood recollections of his grandfather John Bohnsack when growing up on his parents Phillip and Dorothea (Rediske) Bohnsack's farm in Section 14 in Bohnsack Township. This document also has genealogical family group sheets and a pedigree chart, which includes John Bohnsack.
This file also has a page on John and Maria's 8 children, of which 6 lived to adulthood, that was part of a document on Bohnsack family history compiled and written by Dorothy (Bohnsack) Odlaug, a granddaughter of Charles Bohnsack.
John and Maria Bohnsack are the parents of William, Charles and Philip Bohnsack. Charles, or Chas, and Philip Bohnsack farmed in Bohnsack Township, as illustrated in the 1892 and 1909 Atlases for Traill County.
The John Bohnsack farmstead, located in Section 14, is a Century Farm, as it passed down from John Bohnsack to son Philip Bohnsack, to his son Erwin Bohnsack and to his son Brian Bohnsack. Brian and Jan Bohnsack continue to reside on this Century Farm.
Maria (Heineke) Bohnsack passed away in 1896 in Hillsboro, and Johann (John) Bohnsack died on 22 May 1912 in Fargo. They are interred at Bohnsack Cemetery, located in Section 10 in Bohnsack Township, Traill County.Cataloged By
