George Valentine Ackerman Sr. was born on 1 June 1882 in Zimmerau, Bavaria, Germany, the 7th of 8 children born to Philip H. and Karolina (Diezel) Ackerman. On 9 November 1905 George Ackerman Sr. married Antonetta "Nettie" Adams in Grand Forks, ND. Nettie Adams was born on 16 November 1884 in Reynolds, Dakota Territory, to parents Ferdinand and Anna Maria (Ackerman) Adams. Interestingly, Nettie's sister, Katie Adams, married Louis Ackerman, George's brother (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2025.229.1).
George V. Sr. and Nettie (Adams) Ackerman had six children, who were all born in New Rockford, ND, including George V. Jr. (b. 1906, d. 1977), Barbara C. (b. 1907, d. 1999), John W. (b. 1909, d. 1979), Theresa F. (b. 1910, d. 1967), Ferdinand A. (b. 1911, d. 1992), and Edward B. (b. 1913, d. 1913). Five of their children lived to adulthood (family photo, below). George V. Sr. and Nettie (Adams) Ackerman farmed in Michigan Township, Grand Forks County, located adjacent to Traill County. In 1942, they moved to Ogema, MN, locate about 20 miles north of Detroit Lakes, MN. In 1948 George V. Sr. and Nettie Ackerman retired to Detroit Lakes.
George Valentine Ackerman Sr passed away, age 73, on 14 July 1955 [Obituary, Hillsboro Banner, 28 July 1955, below]. Antonetta "Nettie" (Adams) Ackerman died, age 71, on 9 September 1956 [Obituary, Hillsboro Banner, 13 June 1956, below]. They were both interred in the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN [US Find-a-Grave info].
