This family history folder contains a number of documents and photographs on the lives of the Carl William Olson and Margaret Julia Kneip (wedding photo, left). Carl and Margaret farmed in Ervin Township, Traill County (1952 map, below) until they retired and rented their farmland.
From page 9 written by Karen Smith in a 78-page family history document titled "Kneip_Genealogy.pdf" compiled by Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman* (below), we know that Carl Willliam Olson was born on 17 January 1903 to parents Edward and Maria (Johnson) Olson (also see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2022.476.1). Carl was one of 13 children raised on their parent's farm in the NW Qtr. of Sect. 30 in Bingham Township in Traill County, ND (1900 map, below).
As noted in page 9, below, on 15 February 1928 Carl William Olson married Margaret Julia Kneip, who was born on 13 November 1907 in Bridgewater, Adair County, Iowa, the first child of John Peter Jr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Beitz) Kneip (also see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2023.329.1). After Carl and Margaret married, they first rented a farm by Reynolds, ND, for two years before renting a Ole Ellingson farm for seven years. This farm was located in the NW Qtr. of Sect. 20 in Bingham Township (1900 map, below). Carl and Margaret's farmstead was only about 1.5 miles from the Edward and Maria Olson farm where Carl was raised.
Carl William and Margaret Julia (Kneip) Olson had four children (see page 10 from Kneip_Genealogy.pdf, below), including Dorothy Mae Olson (b. 30 Oct. 1928; m. Albert Smith on 7 Jul. 1947, three children: Dale, Wayne & Linda Smith; d. 10 Jul 2021), Viola Marie Olson (b. 6 Feb. 1933; m. Lynn Doeden on 13 Sep. 1955, six children: Sharon, Steven, Robert, LeAnn, Ronald & Michael Doeden; d. 20 Jul. 2006), Donald L. Olson (b. 6 Aug. 1937; d. age 17, 5 Jun. 1955), and Charlotte Louise Olson (b. 28 Jul. 1946; m. Romie J. Adams on 14 Oct. 1964, five children: Timothy, Joan, Patrick, Jill & Jodi Adams; living). As noted on page 9 in Kneip_Genealogy.pdf, Carl and Margaret Olson's only son, Donald, tragically drowned as a teenager
Carl William and Margaret Julia (Kneip) Olson are shown in a family photograph with their four children (below).
As noted by Karen Smith, spouse of Wayne Smith, on page 9 in Kneip_Genealogy.pdf, Carl Olson bought, raised and sold horses in addition to farming grains and raising livestock. When Carl and Margaret retired from farming, they rented their farmland but remained on their homestead in Sect. 23 in Ervin Township. In their later years, they resided on the Fred Doeden farm operated by their daughter Viola (Olson) Doeden and son-in-law Lynn Doeden [info, courtesy LeAnn (Doeden) Beck]. The Lynn and Viola Doeden farmstead was located in the S-half of Sect. 33 in Bingham Township, about 5 miles NW of Caledonia, ND.
Carl William Olson lived to the age of 73, passing away on 21 July 1976 at the Hillsboro Community Hospital [ND Death Certif., below]. Carl was interred at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND [US FaG grave-marker, below].
Margaret Julia (Kneip) Olson died, age 86, on 23 September 1994 at the Hillsboro Nursing Home [ND Death Certif., below]. Margaret was interred next to Carl at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND [US FaG grave-marker, below].
