This folder contains documents and photographs on the lives of Ole H. and Maren (Swenson-Tovsrud) Baglien.
As described in brief documents (see biographies), Ole Hanson Baglien was born on 12 February 1853 in Norway. Following his brother, Ole came to America in 1870 with his parents and family. They first settled near Spring Grove in southeastern Minnesota. In 1878, Ole homesteaded land in Eldorado Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory (see 1892 Atlas map).
Back in Spring Grove, Ole had met neighbor Maren Tovsrud. Ole married Maren Swenson-Tovsrud in December 1881 in Quincy, Traill County. After Ole and Maren married, they settled on farmland Ole had claimed in 1878 in Eldorado Township near Hillsboro in Traill County in Dakota Territory.
Maren Tovsrud was born on 29 April 1863 to parents Knud and Mari Swenson-Tovsrud in Spring Grove. Maren's life is described on pages 48 to 69 in the book "A family History for Hannah [Swenson] and John E. Ludwig, Residents of Hillsboro, North Dakota, USA, in the late 1800s and early to mid-1900s" written in 2016 by John A. Ludwig*, which is available in the TCHS Resource room, Plummer House, Hillsboro, ND (see selected pages, such as their family tree).
* Knud and Mari Swenson-Tovsrud are John Ludwig's great great grandparents.
Ole and Maren Baglien had eleven children (see family tree), with nine of these children living to be adults (see 1905 family photo with eight of their children). Not shown in the photo is their daughter, Selma Baglien, a twin to their son Jerome Baglien. Selma was raised by Maren's sister, Bertha (Swenson) Walters in Cass County, North Dakota, and used the name Selma Walters.
Ole H. Baglien died, age 83, on 11 July 1936 (see obituary) and Maren (Swenson-Tovsrud) Baglien died, age 84, on 3 July 1947 (see obituary). Ole and Maren Baglien were interred in Riverside Cemetery by Hillsboro, ND (see page with grave-marker photos).
Also in this family history folder is a photo of Ole (labelled "Dad", at right in the photo, as contributed by Minnie Baglien), along with Ole's older sister Mary or Maren (Baglien) Knutson, and their father Hans Baglien (at left).
A newspaper article on the life of Maren (Baglien) Knudtson is also included in this family history folder.Cataloged By
