Description

This family history folder on Joseph Beitz and his wife Mary Schreiner (or Shreiner) is based on information in a Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document* compiled and written by Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman and kindly proved to the TCHS by Karen's granddaughter Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner. Information and photos were also obtained from a Ancestry.com Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree developed by Jackie Ausk. Obituaries were available in online Hillsboro Banner newspapers. Joseph Boniface 'Joe' Beitz was born in June 1878, the sixth of ten children born to Adam and Julia (Burg) Beitz (see Catalogit family history entry 2022.268.1; Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, page 4, below). Joe was born in Supplet, Illinois, when his father Adam was farming and helping to build an Illinois prison (Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, page 2, below). In 1880, when Joe was about two, his parents bought farmland in Adair County, Iowa. Joe was raised on this farm. As a young man, Joe Beitz met Mary Schreiner and they married on 27 January 1909 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bridgewater, IA (wedding photo, left). Mary was born on 26 July 1883 in Fontanelle, Adair County, Iowa. Joe and Mary (Schreiner) Beitz had one child, son Lawrence Joseph Beitz (see Ancestry Chart and Family Register pages, below). Lawrence was born on 9 March 1910 in Bridgewater, IA (Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, page 19, below). Joe and Mary Beitz first farmed in Iowa, but in 1920 they bought farmland 5 miles east of Hillsboro, ND, in Herberg Township in Traill County [1927 map, below]. Their son Lawrence was raised on this farm, located near the farm of his Uncle Peter and Uncle Henry Beitz. Lawrence farmed with his father Joseph and inherited the farm when his father died in 1952. On 15 November 1932, Lawrence Joseph Beitz married Loretta Hemberger in Hillsboro (Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, page 20, below). Lawrence and Loretta (Hemberger) Beitz had six children (see Family Register page, below). Notably, many of their children remained and were active in farming and in the Hillsboro community. For example, their oldest daughter, Lorraine Francis Beitz married Rudy Reinpold and they had nine children, all born in Hillsboro (Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, pages 21 & 22, below). Lawrence and Loretta's last child and only son, Eugene Lawrence Beitz married Margaret Adams of Reynolds, and they had seven children born in Hillsboro (Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, page 29, below). As noted above, Lawrence's father passed away in 1952. Joseph Boniface 'Joe' Beitz died, age 74, on 21 October 1952 [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 31 Oct. 1952, below]. Joe was interred at St. Rose of Lime Catholic Cemetery by Hillsboro, ND [US FaG grave-marker photo, below]. Lawrences mother, Mary (Schreiner) Beitz, lived to the grand age of 93, passing away on 22 Sept 1976 in Hillsboro, ND. Her loss was acknowledged by her son. Lawrence and family [Card of Thanks, Hillsboro Banner, 7 Oct. 1976]. Mary was interred next to Joseph at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery by Hillsboro, ND [US FaG grave-marker photo, below]. Joseph and Mary's only child, son Lawrence Beitz, passed away, age 77, on 25 June 1987 [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 6 Jul. 1987, below]. After funeral services at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro, Lawrence was interred at the St. Rose of Lima cemetery by Hillsboro. Lawrence's wife, Loretta (Hemberger) Beitz lived to the age of 83, passing away at the Hillsboro Nursing Home on 25 January 1995 [obit, Hillsboro Banner, 6 Feb. 1995, below]. After funeral services, Loretta was interred next to Lawrence at the St. Rose of Lima cemetery. _________________________ *a Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document was compiled and written by Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman and kindly proved to the TCHS by Karen's granddaughter Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner.
