Description

Bloomfield School No. 1 was originally located in the NW Qtr. of Sect. 8 in Bloomfield Township, as illustrated in a 1900 map (see 1900 map) and in the1909 Standard Atlas for Traill County (see 1909 map). Five years later, in 1919, the Bloomfield Township School Board combined the two schools on the western side of the township into a new Bloomfield No. 1 school built in the SE Qtr. of Sect. 8, as shown in the 1927 Standard Atlas of Traill County (see 1927 map). This school held classes for almost 40 years, closing in 1958. The building served as a Township Hall until the 1990s. The Bloomfield No. 1 schoolhouse was acquired by the Traill County Historical Society (see handout). The TCHS moved the Bloomfield No. 1 school building to its Pioneer Museum grounds in Hillsboro where it was restored to serve as an example of the many one-room rural schools that once were in Traill County. Relocation and restoration were described in 2004 news reports in the Hillsboro Banner and Traill County Tribune (see articles). On 13 May 1921, Bloomfield School No. 1 teacher Bertha Ellingrud reported attendances and studies pursued for 16 students, including Arthur Anderson, Blanche Anderson, Milton Anderson, Lloyd Arnegard, Sybel Christianson, Ella Gulbrandson, Muriel Kopanger, Naome Kopanger, Clarence Lien, Edward Norenberg, Elfrieda Norenberg, Elizabeth Norenberg, Arnold Wilson, Ellsworth Wilson, Lorine Wilson, and Margaret Wilson.
