Description

In 1879, Evangelical Lutherans around the homestead of John Bohnsack in the township in his name, worshiped in their homes. Early founding members included the families of Charles Bohnsack, Christ Lindemann and William Hausmann. In 1890, a church was built on a corner of the homestead of John Bohnsack, father to Charles, located in Section 14. Services were held in German. In July 1935, St John Lutheran began the purchase of the church building of the Lutheran Free Church located in the City of Hillsboro. This purchase was completed in 1936 and St John Lutheran relocated from Bohnsack Township to Hillsboro. In 1940, the St John congregation purchased the former A. G. Foogman residence as a parsonage. In 1947, the Immanuel Lutheran, located east of Hillsobor, was disbanded, and the congregation joined the St. John Lutheran congregation in Hillsboro. The Immanual Lutheran cemetery continues to be maintained east of Hillsboro. The St. John Lutheran cemetery continues its function in Section 10 in Bohnsack Township.
