2023.643.1Description
This 126-page, Fourth Edition book, Traill West: The Early Settlers in Traill County, Dakota Territory, was first published in 2001. As described on the back page, Lorraine Weiler of Mayville-Portland, collected memories from descendants of some of the earliest settlers in Traill County.
For example, Lorraine transcribes, with footnotes, interviews in December 1986, May 1987 and June 1987 with Adolph Hanson, whose father, Hans Hanson, came from Kilbourne, Wisconsin, to what became Traill County in 1871, with brothers Gulbrand and Anders, and with Ingebret Larsen and his wife Clara Synodia Bjertome, brother Ivar Larsen, and with Peter Paulson. They settled along the Goose River between what is now the cities of Hillsboro and Mayville. Soon after they settled in what became known as the Goose River Valley, they organized in 1873 the Gran Lutheran Church, named after their home parish in Hadeland, Norway. Gran Lutheran is located four miles east and one mile south of Mayville. Lorraine describes the history of Gran on pages 115 to 121.
An Appendix A explains the Norwegian naming system.
Appendix B lists the vital statistics of the early settlers noted in this book on pages 125 and 126 (see below). Names include Karen Bakke, O.P.
