Description

This family history folder contains document describing the lives of Robert George and Margret (Rauk) Cooper, who were pioneers of Belmont Township. Robert 'George' Cooper was born in Orono, Ontario Canada on 19 November 1854 (see biographies). In 1878, George filed a land claim in the southeast quarter of section 7 in Belmont Township (see 1900 map), where he established a farmstead. When the 1880 US Census was taken on 3 July in Belmont Township, George was recorded as age 23 and a "Wagon maker". In 1881 Robert George Cooper married Margret Rauk. Margret Rauk was born on 16 March 1862 in Mitchell County, Iowa and was baptized on 22 June 1862 at St Ansgar's First Lutheran Church [ELCA birth-baptism records]. St Ansgar is located in northeastern IA, about 60 miles southwest of Rochester, MN. In the 1870 US Census for St. Ansgar Township in Mitchell County, Margret (Mary in census) was recorded as age 9. In 1877, Mary moved with her parents and siblings to Dakota Territory. In the 1880 US Census collected in Traill County, Dakota Territory, in Township T148N, R49W (Belmont), Margret was age 19 and resided with her parents Knut, age 56, and Mattie (Lien) Rauk, age 58, on the Rauk farm, along with her older brother Christian Rauk, age 24, and uncle Bendict Rauk, age 45. A year after the 1880 census, Margret married R. George Cooper. Interestingly, in the 1885 ND Census for Belmont-Buxton in Traill County, Dakota Territory, Margret (Rauk) Cooper was serving as "Housekeeper" for her older brother Carl Rauk, who was farming other land in Belmont Township. In 1885, Mary's daughter Lottie and son Francis (Frank) were with her on Carl Rauk's farm. Robert George and Margret (Rauk) Cooper had 11 children (see biography), including Lottie, Frank, George, Maude, Edwin, Roy, Wilbur, Robert, Arlone, Hazel, and Charles. Their lives are briefly described below, with dates of birth from records in an Edwin Cooper family album: 1. Charlotte 'Lottie' Rodella Cooper was born on 1 July 1882. In the 1885 ND Census for Traill County, Dakota Territory, Lottie was age 3. In the 1900 US Census, Lottie was listed as age 16 and on the home farm with her parents and siblings. Lottie was not in the 1910 US Census for Belmont Township because by 1909 she was residing in Grand Forks, ND, where at age 27 Lottie was employed as a schoolteacher [1909 City Directory]. Lottie later moved to Montana and had married Fredrick (Fred) August Priess, who was born on 16 December 1881 in Evansville, MN. In the 1920 US Census, Fred, age 38, and Lottie, age 37, lived on Baker St in Ismay, Custer County, MT, where Fredrick was a "Dry goods Merchant". By 1920, they were raising an adopted daughter, Ethel M. Priess, age 10, and a son Leroy F. Priess, age 1, who was born on 14 August 1918 in Ismay. By the 1930 US Census, Fred, age 48, and Lottie, age 47, and children Ethel, age 20, and Leroy, age 11, had moved to a farm located near Belfield in Stark County, North Dakota. Lottie's niece, Vernola Copper, age 14, daughter of Francis and Marie Cooper, was also recorded in the household. By 1935, and in the 1940 US Census, Lottie, age 57, was a widow and was renting a home in Wibaux, Montana. Lottie was operating a "Dry Goods" business with help from her son, Leroy Priess, age 21, who worked as a "Clerk". Lottie's husband, Fred Priess had died on 5 February 1937 in Wibaux, MT, and was interred in the Wibaux Cemetery [US FaG info]. In the 1950 US Census for Wibaux, Lottie at age 68 continue to operate her "Dry goods" retail business in Wibaux. Lottie (Cooper) Priess died at the age of 80 on 3 April 1963 at the Beach Rest Home in Beach, Golden Valley, North Dakota [ND Death Certif.]. Lottie was interred at the Wibaux Cemetery in Wibaux, MT. 2. Francis (Frank) Cooper was born 28 January 1884. In the 1885 ND Census for Traill County, Dakota Territory, Frank was age 1. At age 87, Mary continued to reside with her son and family on the Belmont Township farm [1950 US Census data]. We are fortunate that in her later years in the late 1940s or early 1950s, Margret (Rauk) Cooper reflected on her memories and wrote three stories on life in early times, titled: 1. The Rauk families pioneering in Iowa, 2. Reminiscence of bygone days, and 3. The following is to commemorate certain events in the early history of Frog Point and later the coming of the old settlers around Frog Point. These three reflections are signed by Margret but were not dated. These three stories are also included in TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2026. Margret or Mary (Rauk) Cooper died on 27 June 1956 at the grand age of 94 in Polk County [MN Death Index]. Margret was interred in the Ringsaker Cemetery (see grave-marker photo).
