Description

This family history folder describes the life of George Fleischer, son of CW and Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer, 1879 pioneers in Bohnsack Township, Traill County, DT (see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.12.1). From profiles in a Public Member Tree in Ancestry.com created by Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner and titled: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree, we know that George Fleischer was the last of seven children born to Charles William (CW) and Ernestina Fleischer. George was born on 20 June 1874 in Beaver Falls in Minnesota [obit info, left], where his father, CW Fleischer, operated a mill in nearby Redwood Falls, MN, a village located along the Minnesota River. In 1879, at age 4, George Fleischer moved with his family to a homestead in Bohnsack Township located on land his father, CW Fleischer, had claimed in 1878. The Fleischer homestead was located in the North-half of Section 26 (see Mrs. E. Fleischer land in 1892 plat map, below). Note that by 1892, George's older brother, Wm Fleischer had claimed and farmed land near the Fleischer homestead. In the 1880 US Census for Traill County, George Fleischer was 5 years old. By the 1900 US Census taken in Bohnsack Township, George was now 25 years old and recorded as a "Farm laborer" on the family farm. George's mother, Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer, at age 61, was "Head" of household and "Farmer", with George's sisters, Clara, age 31, and Tillie, age 27, recorded as "Houseworkers". Two farm workers were also listed with them in 1900. Ernestina was head of household because her husband CW Fleischer had gone to Helena, Montana, in about 1883 to mine gold (see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.12.1). By the 1915 ND Census for Traill County, George, age 40, was now recorded as head of the household. His mother, Ernestina, now 76, remained in the household along with George's sister, Tillie Fleischer, age 42. Three farm workers were also recorded in 1915. When the 1920 US Census was taken in Bohnsack Township on 22 January, George Fleischer remained head of household at age 45. George's sister, Tillie Fleischer, age 47, also remained in the household. Their mother, Ernestina was now 81 years old. No farm laborers were listed with the family in 1920. By the 1930 US Census for Bohnsack Township, George, 56, and Tillie, 58, continued to operate the Fleischer home farm, but their mother, Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer, had passed away, age 87, on 1 August 1926. In the 1940 US Census, George, 65, and Tillie, 67, continued farming the Fleischer land in Bohnsack Township. When the 1950 US Census was taken for 15 April, George, 75, and Tillie, 77, still operated the Fleischer farm. Their widowed sister, Clara (Fleischer) McNeilly, now resided with them on the home farm. By 1952, we know that George and Tillie owned the Fleischer homestead in the NE Qtr. of Sect. 26 [see 1952 plat map, below]. In 1957, at age about 82, George Fleischer moved into the City of Hillsboro [obit info]. On 27 November 1957, George made a Last Will and Testament [below]. Five years later, on 25 February 1962, George Fleischer, age 87, passed away in the Hillsboro Hospital [ND Death Certificate, below]. George was interred in Hillsboro's Cemetery No. 1 [US FaG grave-marker, below]. About seven months after Geroge Fleisher's passing, an estate sale was held on the Fleischer homestead to auction off farm machinery and household items [advert, below].
