Description

This family history folder describes the life of Julia Beitz, who helped her brother Peter and Henry farm in Herberg Township in Traill County, North Dakota. Julia is shown in a photograph, at left, with her sisters. Julia M. Beitz was born on 25 April 1880 in Adair County, Iowa, the seventh of ten children born to Adam and Julia (Burg) Beitz (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2022.268.1, and Beitz_Genealogy.pdf*, pages 2 & 4, below). Evidently, Julia was born premature, at a weight of only 3 lb., and was not expected to live ["Did you know that" page, below]. But Julia did live, grew to be almost 6' tall and to a grand age of 94. Julia never married and helped her father Adam and brothers Henry, Peter, Jake, Joseph and John Beitz with farm work, and her mother Julia with housework. When her mother died in 1903 and father died in 1907, Julia, Henry, Peter, Jake and John continued operating the family farm in Jackson Township [1910 US Census data]. Julia's brother Joseph had married and operated his own farm nearby (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2025.238.1). Julia and brothers Henry, Peter and John were still operating the family farm in early 1920 [1920 US Census, taken 15 Jan.]. However, later in 1920 they sold the home farm in Adair County, IA, and moved to Traill County, ND. Julia's brothers Henry and Peter bought 160 acres of farmland in the NW Qtr. of Sect. 6 in Herberg Township [1927 map, below]. Their farm was located next to their brother Joseph's farm (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2025.238.1; 1925 ND Traill County Census data). Joseph and his family had also moved from Adair County, IA, to Traill County, ND. In 1929, Julia's brother Peter Beitz passed away, and her brother Henry died in 1940. Julia, at age 59 in 1940, continued to reside on the Herberg Township farm, and helping her brother Joseph and nephew Lawrence with farming operations. As noted earlier, Julia Beitz lived to the age of 94. After a lingering illness, Julia passed away in the Hillsboro Nursing home on 8 January 1975 [obituary, Hillsboro Banner, 16 Jan. 1975, below]. After funeral services held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro, Julia was interred at the Catholic cemetery by Hillsboro [photo of grave-marker, below]. _________________________ *a Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document was compiled and written by Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman and kindly proved to the TCHS by Karen's granddaughter Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner.
