Description

This family history folder demonstrates that many of the descendants of Adam and Julia (Burg) Beitz became residents of Traill County. Adam and Julia died in Iowa, but after their deaths, a number of their children, including Henry, Peter, Carolyn, Julia, and Joseph came to settle in Traill County, mostly in 1920. As described in a "The Beitz Family" document (below), Adam Beitz was the oldest son of born to Peter Lewis Sr. and Margaretta Beitz. In addition to son Adam, Peter and Margaretta had many descendants as shown in a "Beitz Migration" document (below) and four pages (18-21) from a chart of "Descendants" (below). Adam was born in Germany on 13 January 1833, the first of five children as shown on page 1 in a Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document* (below). The Beitz Family document indicates that Peter Lewis Sr. and Margaretta Beitz had six children: Adam, Peter, Margaret, Mary, Katherine and Valentine Beitz. Julia Burg was born in Germany on 10 January 1843, the ninth of eleven children born to Conrad and Kathrine Burg (pages 1 & 3, below). A photograph of Conrad and Katherine, and a family story is available (below), courtesy of Mildred Thomas. At the age of about 30 in 1863, Adam left Germany and came to Chicago, IL, where he worked as a stone cutter. Adam Beitz met and married Julia Burg in Chicago (page 2, below). Adam and Julia had five children in Chicago, including Henry, Peter, Jake, Elizabeth, Kate and Karie (pages 2 & 4, below). In 1897 they moved to Supplet, IL, where Adam farmed and help build a prison. A son Joe Beitz was born while they lived in Supplet. In 1880, Adam and Julia, and children moved to Adair County in Iowa, where he purchased land to farm. Julia's brothers, Conrad and George were already settled on farms near Bridgewater in Adair County. While farming in Adair County, Adam and Julia had four more children, Julia, Maggie, John and lastly Adam Jr, who sadly died in early childhood. Notably, Adam and Julia donated a plot of their land in Jackson Township in Adair County for construction of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its cemetery. At the age of 60, on 16 December 1903, Julia (Burg) Beitz died and was buried in this cemetery. Adam Beitz lived to the age of 74, passing away on 8 March 1907. The day before his passing, on 7 March 1907, Adam declared his last will and testament, which was witnessed and filed in Adair County District Court (below). Adam Beitz was buried next to Julia in the St. Mary's cemetery [US-FaG Monument, below]. After the passing of their parents, sons Henry and Peter Beitz and daughter Julia Beitz continued to farm the family land near Bridgewater in Adair County, IA. But, in 1920, Henry and Peter sold the family farm and along with their brother Joseph Beitz bought land in the north-half of section 6 in Herberg Township in Traill County, ND (see 1927 plat map, below). Henry, Peter and Julia Beitz did not marry and leave descendants in Traill County (see Beitz-Genealogy.pdf, pages 2 & 4, below). However, Joseph Beitz married Mary Shreiner and their son, Lawrence Beitz, married Loretta Hemberger (see Catalogit family history entry 2025.238.1). Lawrence and Loretta's daughter Lorraine Beitz married Rudy Reinpold of Hillsboro, and their son Eugene Beitz married Margaret Adams of Reynolds. Besides Henry, Peter, Joseph and Julia settling in Traill County, a number of other children of Adam and Julia (Burg) Beitz also settled in the area (see Beitz-Genealogy.pdf, pages 2 & 4, below). For example, their fifth child, Caroline Ann, or Karie Beitz (Mrs. Wolfgang Schreiner) also came to Traill County, and their eighth child, Margaret Beitz, married John Peter Kneip Jr. (see Catalogit family history entry 2023.329.1). _________________________ *a Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document was compiled and written by Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman and kindly proved to the TCHS by Karen's granddaughter Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner.
