Description

The life of Sven Olson, father to my great grandfather, Oluff Svenson, is described in a book: A Timeline of Oluff Svenson's Life: Norway to the USA" researched, written and published in 2020 by Oluff's great grandson, John A. Ludwig. This book documents that Sven had eight children in Norway, including Oluff Svenson, my great grandfather, with his first wife, Margrethe Nielsdatter, who died age 41 in about 1872 (family tree). Sven Olson then married Ingeborg Torgersdatter and they had ten children (family tree). Sven and Ingeborg came to America in 1873 and first settled on a farm by Waterville in Allamakee County, Iowa. In 1878, they came to North Dakota, and obtained a farm of 154 acres by 'pre-emption' for $300. This farm was in the SW Qtr. of Section 6 in Hillsboro Township, located just one mile west of what became the village of Hillsboro in 1881 (map). In 1882 or 1883, Sven and Ingeborg moved with their family to a farm in the NW Qtr of Section 24 in Norway Township (map). After running into legal difficulties (see pages 27 to 31 in the book "A Timeline of Oluff Svenson's Life: Norway to the USA"; Catalogit entry 2022.672.1; this book is available in the TCHS Resource room, Plummer House, Hillsboro, ND.), Sven, Ingeborg and family moved in 1886 to a farm by Cray in Ontario Township. Ramsey County, DT. Then in 1903, Sven and Ingeborg, and son Louie, moved to a farm in Newborg Township in Bottineau County, ND. Sven's son, Oluff Svenson, had homesteaded a farm in Newborg Township in 1900. Ingeborg (Ronningen) Olson passed away on 30 March 1923, and two days later, Sven Olson died on 1 April 1923. Sven and Ingeborg Olson, my great great grandparents, are buried in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery located in Section 8 in Newborg Township (monument photo). Jack Ludwig
