Description

This family history file folder contains images and documents about the lives of Amy (Hagen) and Lawrence Walz [photo, left]. Their lives are briefly summarized below from information in a Public Member Tree in Ancestry.com titled: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree, which was kindly provided by Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner; Amy Hagen was Jackie's great great aunt. Amy Judith Hagen was born on 15 March 1918 in Hillsboro, Traill County, ND, to parents John and Hannah (Larson) Hagen [see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.25.1]. In the 1920 US Census, taken on 7 January in Hillsboro, Amy was nearly 2 years old and lived with her family in a rented house on Sargeant Street. In 1920, Amy's father, John Hagen, was working as a house painter. In the 1930 US Census, Amy was 12 years old and lived with her family on Sargeant Street in Hillsboro. In 1930, her father continued to work as a house painter. In June of 1936, Amy Hagen graduated from Hillsboro High School with the Class of 36 [HHS Sr. photo, below]. About seven-months after graduating from Hillsboro High School, Evidently, Amy Judith Hagen married Lawrence Edward Walz on 26 January 1937 [photo, left]. Lawrence was born on 9 July 1917 in Pilot Grove Missouri to parents John W. and Ida (Lorenz) Walz [FaG memorial info]. After graduating from high school, Lawrence joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Glacier Natl. Park. Lawrence then worked for the Rural Electric Admin. (REA) in eastern North Dakota putting in electric lines, and there in Hillsboro Lawrence Walz met Amy Hagen. After Amy and Lawrence were married in 1937, Amy first stayed in the area and she had their daughter, Kathleen Marie Walz in Fargo on 23 September 1938. In the 1940 US Census taken in Hillsboro on April 3rd, Amy and daughter Kathleen were staying with Amy's parents, John and Hannah, on Sargeant Street, whereas in the 1940 US Census in Hillsboro taken on 17 April, Lawrence Walz was recorded as a "Lodger" in the household of Reinholt and Salome Haring. In this 1940 census, Lawrence was recorded as working as an "Electrician wiring REA houses". Then on 16 October 1940, Lawrence registered for the Selective Service at age 23. On his Selective Service card, Lawrence stated that he was employed by Paul Kritzberger of Hillsboro. Lawrence was described as being 6' tall, 180 lb., and had blue eyes and brown hair. Late in 1940 or early in 1941, Lawrence, Amy and daughter Kathleen moved to Missoula, MT, because on 27 January 1941, Amy and Lawrence were evidently married again by a Justice of the Peace in Missoula [MT Marriage Certif., below]. In the 1950 US Census taken in the City of Missoula, Lawrence, age 32, and Amy, 31, resided on Phillips Street, while Lawrence was employed as a "Locomotive fireman" for the "Railroad". In 1950, their two children, Kathleen, 11, and Richard, 8, were listed with them on Phillips St. Kathleen Marie Walz was born on 23 September 1938 in Fargo, as noted earlier, and as a young child moved with her parents to Missoula, MT. At the age of 18, Kathleen married Loren Emery Butler on 2 March 1957 in Missoula. Loren and Kathleen had three children, Cindy Lynn Butler (b. 16 Feb. 1958), Cherly Leigh Butler (b. 6 Jun. 1960), and Rich Wesley Butler (b. 6 Jun. 1961). Loren Butler passed away, age 57, on 29 Oct. 1991. After Loren's passing, Kathleen (Walz) Butler married Larry Houtchens of Missoula. Larry passed away, age 81, on 28 April 2007 in Missoula. Kathleen continues to reside in Missoula. Lawrence and Amy's son, Richard Allen Walz, was born on 24 March 1942 in Missoula, as noted earlier. At the age of 24, Richard married Barbara Erickson on 16 November 1966 in Missoula. They reside in Great Falls, MT. In 1955, Lawrence, Amy and family continued to reside on Phillips Street [1955 Missoula city Directory]. We also know from Amy's brother Norman's obituary, that in 1964, they still resided in Missoula. Lawrence Edward Walz died, age 88, of diabetes and hypertension on 30 September 2005 at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula [MT Death Certif., below]. The certificate notes that Lawrence's usual occupation when working was an "Engineer" in the "Railroad" industry. His residence was recorded as Phillips Street in Missoula. Lawrence was cremated after memorial services at the Garden City Crematory in Missoula [obituary, The Missoulian, 2 Oct. 2005, below]. Apparently, his ashes were kept by family. Amy Judith (Hagen) Walz lived to the grand age of 95, passing away on 29 April 2013 of congestive heart failure [MT Death Certif., below]. As Amy wished, she died under hospice care at her home on Phillips Street in Missoula [obituary, The Missoulian, 5 May 2013, below]. After a memorial at her home, Amy was cremated at the Garden City Crematory in Missoula. Apparently, her ashes were kept by family.
