Description

Mayville School No. 4 was evidently first located in the SW Qtr. of Sect. 24 in Mayville Township, as shown in the 1900 Atlas for Traill County, ND. As shown in the 1952 Traill County Atlas, apparently School No. 4 was moved to or rebuilt across the road in the corner of the NE Qtr. of Sect. 26. Based on information in Earl 'Red' Swenson’s memoir compiled and published by his nephew Bill Lawrence, Earl (a son of Elling and Hannah (Sundby) Swenson, said that “we went to a one room school house. The school was a wooden building, had a well with a hand pump, but no indoor plumbing.” This rural Mayville School No. 4 no longer exists. During the 1924-1925 school year, Mayville School No. 4 teacher, Hannah Haugen, kept attendance records for 19 students including Duane Ellingrud, Lois Ellingrud, Hazel Grindeland, Manvel Grindeland, Palmer Grindeland, Irene Hanson, Geneva Johnson, Isadore Johnson, Ida Olsen, Victor Olsen, McLean Paulson, Merlen Paulson, Hillis Sathre, Delmer Swenson, Karen Swenson, Kenneth Swenson, Lola Swenson, Louis Ulland, and Marcus Ulland.
