Description

This George Albert and Clara Jane 'Jennie' (Jalbert) Elliott family history folder contains documents and photographs compiled by Carol (Lillefloren) Boeddeker (Mrs. Wilfred 'Willie' Boeddeker) formerly of Hillsboro. Carol wrote three family history documents centered on her grandmother, Annie Harriet Jalbert (Mrs. John Weller Jr.). These three documents printed in about 2006 are described in a Jalbert Family History three-ring binder available for reading at the TCHS Plummer House Museum in Hillsboro, ND (see TCHS Catalogit entry 2026.3.1). Carol (Lillefloren) Boeddeker noted in one of her Jalbert Family History documents that "My mother, Louise Caroline Weller Lillefloren, lived with and worked for 'Aunt Jennie' and helped raise her children Abbie and Ethel. She told me 'Aunt Jennie' went by the name Clara Jane (see photo) although she was baptized Janet Clara. My aunt, Bertha Ann Weller, the oldest child of 'Aunt Jennie's oldest sister, has confirmed this." George Albert Elliott was born on 17 September 1866 in Clinton in Goderich Township in Huron County, Ontario, Canada (see Grandin Centennial book information). A birth year of 1866 is written for George in some records and his family name is spelled Elliot [e.g., ND Death Certif.]. George was one of nine sons born to parents James H. and Mary (Currie) Elliott of Ontario, Canada. George A. Elliott likely followed his older brother, Thomas Elliott, who came in 1880 and settled on land located east of Grandin in Sections 4, 5, & 10 in Noble Township [see 1893 plat map]. From information the Grandin Centennial book, Thomas only farmed for four years before moving into Grandin [see info on page 93, Grandin Centennial book]. By the time of the 1900 US Census, George Albert Elliott along with a wife Alice were the only Elliott family recorded as farming in Noble Township. On 22 May 1889, George Albert Elliott had married Alice Lavina Hanley in Cass County [ND Marriage Index]. Alice was born on 31 March 1868 and, as George, in Goderich Township in Huron County, Ontario, Canada [see Family tree]. George and Alice had a daughter, Mary Gertrude Elliott, on 4 April 1893 on their Noble Township farm [info, courtesy Ancestry.com "Elliott/Gilbert Family Tree"]. Sadly, Mary Gertrude Elliott only lived to the age of 7, passing away on 23 November 1900 on the Noble Township farm. Then double tragedy, Alice became ill and passed away, age 34, on 22 June 1902 back in Ontario, Canada. Three years later, at age 38, George Albert Elliott married Clara Jane Jalbert, age 23, on 11 May 1905 in Grandin, ND [see 1981 Grandin Centennial book, pg. 94]. Clara Jane 'Jennie' Jalbert was born on 19 March 1882 in Cass County, ND [see item 145, pg. 65, Jalbert Family History]. Note that Jennie was baptized into a Presbyterian Church in Grandin, ND. Clara Jane Jalbert's parents were Louis-Marie Jalbert and Marie-Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Peladeau [see item 120, pgs. 53 & 54, Jalbert Family History]. Note that Louis and Lizzie came from Canada to the Red River Valley in 1879 and settled near what became the Village of Grandin in 1881, and although they were raised in the Catholic Church, they attended the Presbyterian Church in Grandin. Clara Jane Jalbert was their fourth (iv) of eleven (xi) children [see item 120, pgs. 55 & 56, Jalbert Family History]. Louis and Lizzie Jalbert's eleven children included Moses Moy Jalbert, Mary Anne Jalbert, John Louis Jalbert, Clara Jane Jalbert, William James Jalbert, George Thomas Jalbert, Mary Agnes Jalbert, Arthur Sebastian Jalbert, Frederick Albert Jalbert, Charles Edward Jalbert, and Arnold Wilson Jalbert. Note that their first child, Moses Jalbert, was born in 1876 and only lived to the age of 3, passing away in1879 in Quebec. Louis and Lizzie's last child, Arnold Wilson Jalbert, was born in 1898 in Grandin, and died age 63 in 1961 in Fargo. In the 1910 US Census, George A. (age 42) and Jennie C. (age 28) Elliott were recorded as farming in Kenyon Township in Cass County, ND, with George's occupation as "Labourer" on "Own farm", indicating they owned their farm. In 1920 and 1930 US Census data, George and Jennie Elliot continued to farm in Kenyon Township, and they were recorded with two children, Albert and Ethel. But, we know that George Albert Elliott and Clara Jane 'Jennie' Jalbert actually had three children: Mary Elizabeth Elliott, Albert Louis Elliott, and Ethel Prudence Elliott [see item 145, pg. 66, Jalbert Family History]. Note that George and Jennie Elliott's first child, daughter Mary Elizabeth Elliott, only lived for two months, being born on 26 May 1910 and dying on 25 July 1910. George and Jennie Elliott's second child, Albert Louis Elliott, was born on 9 March 1915 in Grandin. Albert was raised on his parent's farm by Grandin [1920, 1930 US Census]. On 24 July 1935, Albert Louis Elliot married Lorraine May Diemert in Fargo, ND [see item 169, pgs. 79 & 80, Jalbert Family History]. Note that Lorraine was born on 6 September 1915 in Arthur, ND, to parents George and Barbara (Kronebush) Diemert. Also note that Albert earned a degree at North Dakota State University in Fargo and was a principal and coach for three years at a high school in Sarles, ND. Albert also served in the US Army and as a Border Patrol Officer, and eventually Albert and Lorraine settled on a farm by Galesburg, ND [see 1952 map], where they raised 11 children [see item 169, pgs. 79 & 80, Jalbert Family History]. A family photo taken and included in the 1982 Galesburg Centennial book shows Albert Sr. and Lorraine Elliot with all eleven of their children along with their spouses [see family photo]. The lives of these 11 children are briefly described in the 1982 Galesburg Centennial book [see pgs. 198 & 199]. From Carol (Lillefloren) Boeddeker-Genet's Jalbert Family History information, we know that Lorraine Mary (Diemert) Elliott died, age 80, on 1 January 1996 in Page, ND. Albert Louis Elliott lived to that age of 84, passing away on 5 January 2000 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND. Albert and Lorraine were interred at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Page, ND. George and Jennie Elliott's third, and last, child, Ethel Prudence Elliott, was born on 7 September 1919 in Grandin, and was raised on the home farm by Grandin [1920 & 1930 US Census data]. On 19 August 1938 Ethel (see photo) married George Willis Brown in Grandin [see item 170, pg. 80, Jalbert Family History]. Note that George was born on 31 July 1910 in Moody County, South Dakota. George and Ethel (Elliott) Brown had three children, Jacqueline, Geraldine and Larry Brown [see item 170, pg. 81, Jalbert Family History]. Note that all their children were born in Halstad, MN. From Carol (Lillefloren) Boeddeker-Genet's Jalbert Family History information, we know that George Willis Brown died on 17 June 1975 at Spirit Lake in Otter Tail County, MN. Ethel Prudence (Elliott) Brown lived to the age of 84, passing away on 18 April 2004 in Fargo, ND. After raising their children on their farm by Grandin, George and Jennie Elliot continued active lives in the farming community into retirement. George Albert Elliott died, age 63, on 6 May 1931 at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo [see ND Death Certif.] and was interred at the local Grandin Community Cemetery [see obituary], located three-and-a-half miles west of town. Clara Jane 'Jennie' (Jalbert) Elliott died on 24 June 1945, age 63, in Grandin [see obituary]. Jennie was interred next to George at the Grandin Community Cemetery.
