This family history folder contains a two-page document (below) written by Ina (Tonn) Schlichtmann about her mother, Bertha (Ellingrud) Tonn. Bertha was born in 1889, the 5th child of Lars (photo) and Mathea (Pederson) Ellingrud (see 1900 US Census, below). Lars and Mathea (Martha) were pioneers in the NE Qtr. of Section 6 in Bloomfield Township, Traill County, DT (see 1892 plat map). Bertha Ellingrud was raised on the original Ellingrud farm in Bloomfield Township and attended Bloomfield School #1, which is now on display at the Traill County Historical Society Museum's Pioneer site in Hillsboro. Bertha also attended Mayville Normal School (now Mayville State University) to become a teacher.
After graduating, she taught schools by Portland, Cummins and Norway Township School #3 for about 10 years. Bertha Ellingrud married John Tonn in 1921, after he was discharged from the US Army after WWI. After marrying, John and Bertha farmed the original Ellingrud farm in Section 6 in Bloomfield Township. Bertha (Ellingrud) and John Tonn had two children, Ina Tonn (b. 1925) and Ira Tonn (b. 1928). Ira was killed in a tractor accident in 1958. John Tonn passed away in 1952 and Bertha (Ellingrud) Tonn died, age 76, in 1966.
