Description

This family history folder describes the life of Anna Sophia Fleischer, the daughter of Charles William (CW) and Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer, who homesteaded in Bohnsack Township in Traill County in 1879 (see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.12.1). Anna Sophia Fleisher was born on 18 September 1866 in Carrollton in Carroll County, Ohio [see Anna's profile in Jackie Baumgartner's Ancestry.com Public Member Tree: "Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree"]. In the 1870 US Census, Anna was 3 and she was recorded with her parents and siblings in a census for Redwood Falls, Minnesota, near where her father, CW Fleischer operated a mill along the Minnesota River. By the time of the 1880 US Census, Anna, age 13, had moved with her parents and siblings to a homestead on land in Bohnsack Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory. Her father, CW Fleischer had staked a claim on this land in 1878, and he then in 1879 settled there with his family. Anna grew up on this Fleischer homestead in Bohnsack Township. At the age of 18, Anna Sophia Fleischer married neighbor Henry Miller, age 23, on 24 December 1884 [wedding photo, left]. Henry was born on 11 September 1861 to parents Henry H. and Dorothea (Selk) Miller in Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Henry was raised in Plymouth but in 1882, at age 21, he claimed and homestead land located in the SE Qtr. of Sect. 14 in Bohnsack Township [see 1892 plat map, below]. Henry's homestead was only one mile north of the Fleischer homestead. After Henry and Anna married, they farmed the land in Bohnsack Township. Henry and Anna had two children on their Bohnsack farm, Ida and Edward Miller [family tree, below]. Ida Elizabeth Miller was born on 3 October 1885. Ida was raised and schooled in Bohnsack Township, but by the time of the 1900 US Census, Ida had moved with her parents, Henry and Anna, and her brother Edward, to a house on Clark Street in Hillsboro, where Ida went to school. In the 1900 census, Ida's father, Henry, declared that he was employed as a "Drayman". Then in 1908, Ida's parents, Henry and Anna, had purchased the Seaver farm near Hillsboro (1-mile S) [obit info]. However, at the time of the 1910 US Census taken in May, Ida was with her family in Kelso Township in Traill County where Ida's father, Henry, was employed on a Dalrymple Bonanza farm. Interestingly, in this 1910 census, Anna declared that she had given birth to 3 children with 2 living (Ida and Edward), so Anna and Henry had lost a child. Sadly, in 1912, Ida and Edward's father, Henry Miller, developed cancer of the intestines and passed away, age 50, at their home in Hillsboro on 9 March after being hospitalized in Fargo for a month [obit info, below]. After funeral services at the Congregational Church in Hillsboro, Henry Miller was interred in Hillsboro's cemetery [grave-marker photo, below]. Seven years after her father's passing, Ida Elizabeth Miller, age 33, married local farmer Theodore Halvorson, age 34, at the Fleischer farm in Bohnsack Township. After Ida and Theodore married, they lived on the Halvorson farm located in the NE Qtr. of Sect. 24 in Bloomfield Township, Traill County. Theodore and Ida had two children, Helen Halvorson (b. 19 Mar. 1921; m. Ervin Koering, 6 Dec. 1946; died, age 82, 6 Dec. 1946) and Kenny Halvorson (b. 29 Arp. 1925; m. Dorothy Munter, 25 Oct. 1946; d. age 81, 23 Feb. 2007). Theodore and Ida farmed in Bloomfield Township until 1946, when they moved into the City of Hillsboro. Theordore Halvorson died, age 75, on 12 January 1960 in Hillsboro, where he was interred in the cemetery [US FaG Grave-marker, below]. Ida Elizabeth (Miller) Halvorson lived to the age of 87, passing away on 1 January 1973 at her home in Hillsboro [ND Death Certif., below]. Ida was interred next to her husband, Theodore, in Hillsboro's Cemetery [US FaG Grave-marker, below]. Henry and Anna Miller's second child, son Edward William Miller, was born on 21 April 1888 on the home farm in Bohnsack Township [family tree, below]. As his older sister, Ida, Edward was raised and schooled in Bohnsack township until his parent's moved to Clark Street in Hillsboro [1900 US Census]. Edward was then raised and schooled in Hillsboro, although as noted above, in the 1910 US Census, Edward was recorded with his family in Kelso Township while his father, Henry Miller, was employed on a Dalrymple Bonanza farm. Then Edward's father, Henry passed away in 1912. Three years later on 30 October 1915, Edward William Miller, age 27, married rural Hillsboro Township woman, Emma Elizabeth Henka, age 20, in Hillsboro. Emma Henka was born on 1 June 1895 in Hillsboro. Edward and Emma had two girls, Francis Evelyn Miller (b. 12 Nov. 1916; m. Stanley Glass, 20 Feb. 1937 in Lewistown, MT; d. age 90, 4 Apr. 2007 in Bozeman, MT) and Mildred Emma Miller (b. 16 Nov. 1918; m. Thomas Farmer, 8 Jan. 1936 in Lewistown, MT; d. age 80, 12 Apr. 1999 in Great Falls, MT). Sadly, two days after the birth of her daughter Mildred Miller, Emma (Henka) Miller passed away on 18 November 1918 on the Henka home farm, leaving behind her husband, Edward Miller, and two daughters, Frances and Mildred Miller. In the 1920 US Census for Hillsboro Township, widow Edward Miller is farming on rented land. In this 1920 census, Edward's mother, Anna (Fleischer) Miller, age 53, is in the household to help care for daughters Frances, age 3, and Mildred, age 1. A year later, on 2 November 1921, widow Edward Miller, age 33, married Emma Caroline Krogh, age 29, of Portland, ND. In 1923, Edward and Emma moved to Beaver Creek near Havre, Montana, and soon after to Denton northwest of Lewistown, MT [obit info]. Edward and Emma's daughter, Avonne Marion Miller was born in Lewistown on 15 March 1924 (m. E. Dean Vaughan, 30 Oct. 1943 in Bozeman; d, age 54, 14 Jan. 1979 in Great Falls). In the 1930 US Census for Denton, Fergus County, MT, Edward, age 39, and Emma, age 37, were farming on land they owned. In 1930, daughters Frances, age 13, Mildred, 11, and Avon, 6, were listed in the household. In 1939, Edward, Emma and daughters moved to a cattle ranch 4 miles west of Bozeman, MT. In the 1940 US Census, Edward, age 49, Emma, age 46, and daughter Avon, age 16, resided along Vandyke Road SW of Bozeman. In the 1950 US Census collected on 19 April, Edward, age 61, and Emma, age 59, resided along Liberty Drive NW of Bozeman. Less than a month after the 1950 US Census was taken, Edward William Miller passed away, age 62, on 12 May 1950 of a heart attack at his home 4 miles west of Bozeman [MT Certificate of Death, below]. Edward was interred in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Bozeman, MT [US FaG info]. Emma (Krogh) Miller lived to the age of 90, passing away on 13 July 1983 in Olympia, Washington. After Henry Miller's passing in 1912, Anna (Fleischer) Miller continued to reside at her home by Hillsboro. But then Anna made her home with her son, Edward Miller in Hillsboro Township [1920 US Census] and then later with her daughter, Ida (Mrs. Theodore) Halvorson, of Bloomfield Township [1925 ND Census]. Later in life, Anna resided in Arthur, ND [obit info, below]. Anna (Fleischer) Miller died, age 74, from pneumonia. After funeral services at the Congregational Church in Hillsboro, Anna was interred at the Hillsboro's Riverside Cemetery [grave-marker photo, below].
