Description

This family history folder contains pages describing how Thore and Kari (Larsdatter) Halvorson came to America in 1872 and first settled in Iowa. In 1879, they came with their young family by wagon to establish a claim to a farmstead on land that became Bloomfield Township in Traill County, Dakota Territory. They first lived in a sod shanty, then a log cabin and finally a frame house on their farmstead (see farmstead photo). In the 1885 Dakota Territory census for Traill County, Thore (age 42) and Kari (age 37) Halvorson were recorded on their farmstead with five children, including Rachel (age 10), Mary (age 8; Elizabeth in census), Bertha (age 6; Laura B. in census), Halvor (age 4), and Theodore (age 6 months). Listed on the Thore and Kari Halvorson farm was the family of Thore's sister, Ingeborg (Halvorson) Larson (see Catalogit family history entry 2022.424.1). [Although in this 1885 census the Thore Halvorson farmstead was listed as being in Hillsboro Township, it was actually located in the NE Qtr. of Section 24 in East Blanchard Township (later Bloomfield Township)]. This farmstead became a century farm because Thore passed the farm to his son, Theo Halvorson, who then passed it on to his son Kenneth Halvorson. This historic homestead is now owned by Tim Kozojed of Hillsboro.
