Description

As described in a 17 December 2011 issue of the Grand Forks Herald, a Hutterite Colony near Mitchell, SD, is breaking off to form a new Colony in Traill County, ND, named Spruce Lane Colony. As shown in a Plat map, this new Hutterite Colony will be located in the north half of Section 6 in Bohnsack Township. To facilitate the establishment of their new Hutterite Colony, early in 2011, Michael Waldner, representing the new Spruce Lane Colony, began the process of obtaining building permits from the Bohnsack Township Board, see for example, a permit to construct a building to serve as a church, and for day care, dining and laundry. Building permits were also applied to Bohnsack Township for a cement mixing plant, a manufacturing building, a sewage system lagoon, two houses fro Colony members, a building for water, electrical and phone utilities, a storage building for farm equipment, a grain storage and handling system, and a chicken and duck barn. In addition, the Spruce Colony obtained Engineer's Reports, as for example, on the "Domestic Wastewater Treatment Facility. Another Engineer's Report was obtained for the "Animal Waste Management System". A group called "Residents for a Greener Traill" opposed to the new Hutterite Colony, represented by Vogel Law Firm in Fargo (see letter dated 2 Aug. 2011), voiced their concerns to the proposed sewage lagoon at a public hearing held at the Traill County courtroom on 17 November 2011 (see Hillsboro Banner news, 25 Nov. 2011). Other letters of concern by "Residents for a Greener Traill" were filed by Vogel to the Bohnsack Township Board on 17 Oct. 2011, 25 Oct. 2011, & 10 Nov. 2011. Minutes during the public meeting held on 17 November 2011 were taken and reported by Kerstin I. Schiltz (see report cover). As reported by the Hillsboro Banner on 16 December 2011, a meeting of the Bohnsack Township Board resulted in the approval of building permits filed by the Hutterite Spruce Lane Colony, with construction to begin in the Spring of 2012. A six-page brochure explains the who, what and where of The Hutterian Brethren (see below). The document noted above are available for viewing in the Resource Room at the TCHS Plummer House Museum in Hillsboro, ND.
