Description

This folder contains information on the lives of Peder J. and Margit P. (Borgen) Kamphaug (or Kamphaugh), early settlers by Hatton in Traill County, North Dakota. Family photographs (left) and brief family histories (below) are available in the book "Hatton Centennial, 1884-1984: A Century of Change". Also, information was notably compiled by Linda Hardesty into a Pedigree Chart (below) and a 13-page Family Group Record (below), using numerous sources including family correspondences as well as personal interviews during a trip to North Dakota in May 1910. Earlier family information was available from a set of 2002 documents and emails*, along with recent records in ancestry.com and in archived local newspapers such as the Hatton Free Press. Peder Johanneson Kamphaug was born on 18 August 1860 near Kongevinger, Solar, Norway [Hatton Centennial book, info pg. 384, part 1]. Peder's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Johannes Kamphaugh [Hatton Centennial book, info pg. 383 and 384, below]. In 1867, they had migrated from Norway to Decorah, Iowa, like many Norwegians. After five years, Johannes sent his son Peder Johannes Kamphaug tickets to join the family in Iowa. Of interest is that Johannes also sent his sister Inger Kamphaug a ticket, who also came to Iowa and later married Ole Eriksen (see Catalogit family history entry 2025.244.1). After farming in Iowa, the Kamphaug families moved in 1879 to homestead farmlands north of the town that became Hatton, Dakota Territory. From a 1927 Grand Forks County Atlas map for Washington Township (below), we can see that by 1927 Peder J. Kamphaug had land in Section 18 (160 acres), 19 (320 acres) and 30 (320 acres). The homestead was located in Section 30, about five miles north of Hatton. A school was located nearby in Section 29. Peder J. Kamphaug married Margit G. Borgen on 8 December 1887 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hatton [Hatton Centennial book, info pg. 384]. Margit was born pn 16 January 1869 in Hallingrad, Norway, to parents Gaute and Ingeborg Borgen [see Pedigree Chart, below]. From 1888 to 1914, Peder J. and Margit (Borgen) Kamphaug had 12 children [Family Group Record, pages 1 to 13, below]. This record compiled by Linda Hardest documents that Peder and Margit's 7th child, Johan Kamphaug was born and died on 7 June 1903. Eleven of their children survived to adulthood, as shown in the family photograph and as documented in the 13-page Family Group Record. These 13 pages provide fascinating stories and data on not only Peder and Margit, but also on their 11 surviving children, which are current up to June 2010 when Linda Hardesty kindly donated copies to the TCHS Plummer House Museum in Hillsboro, ND. As documented on page 5 of the Family Group Record, Peder J. Kamphaug passed on 31 January 1944, age 83, whereas Margit (Borgen) Kamphaug has proceeded Peder, dying in September 1935, age 66. Peder and Margit were interred at the Eielson Norwegian Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hatton, Traill County, ND. ___________________________ * In 2002, on-line searches were conducted by Geraldine or Gerry Mohn, a TCHS volunteer, for descendants of Kamphaug's who settled by Hatton in Traill County. Gerry corresponded with Phil Olsen of Tahoe City, CA, Linda Hardesty of Arcadia, CA, Sherry Bodden, Fargo, ND, and with Gayle Collins of Kalispell, MT. Phil Olsen summarized findings to indicate that three groups of Kamphaug's came to the Hatton area, including Peder, a son of Johannes and Olea (Pedersdatter) Kamphaug, Martin and Marthea Kamphaug, and Ole, a son of Olaus Kamphaug.
