2025.242.1Description
This family history folder contains information on Wolfgang Schreiner (or Shreiner) and his wife Caroline Beitz. Information was extracted from the Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document, which was compiled and written by the late Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman and kindly proved to the TCHS by Karen's granddaughter Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner. Other Information was obtained from descendants of Wolfgang and from an Ancestry.com Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree developed by Jackie Ausk. Obituaries were available from online Hillsboro Banner newspapers.
Wolfgang Schreiner Jr. was born on 26 June 1863 in Austria to parents Wolfgang Schreiner Sr and Theresia Kopp (see Family Register document, below). In 1882, at the age of 19, Wolfgang Jr. came to America with his parents to settle by Bridgewater, Iowa [obit info]. On 29 May 1895, Wolfgang Schreiner Jr., age 31, married Caroline Ann Beitz, 21, in Bridgewater.
Caroline (Karolyn, Karie) Ann Beitz was born on 12 July 1873, the fifth of ten children born to Adam and Julia (Burg) Beitz (see Catalogit family history entry 2022.268.1; Beitz_Genealogy.pdf, pages 2 & 4, below). Caroline was born in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of about 7, in 1880, Carolyn's moved to Iowa where her parents' bought farmland in Jackson Township in Adair County, Iowa. At the age of 21, in May 1895, Caroline married Wolfgang.
Wolfgang Jr. and Caroline (Beitz) Schreiner had nine children, of which eight lived to adulthood (see Family Register document, below, and Beitz_Genealogy.pdf pages 9 & 10, below). As noted in the Family Register, their daughter Helena Frances Schreiner died at age two on 23 March1909. Wolfgang Jr. and Caroline's are shown in a family photograph taken in about 1917, soon after they had moved from where they first farmed in
Although Wolfgang Jr. and Caroline (Beitz) Schreiner first farmed in Iowa, but in 1917 they left Iowa and bought a 428-acre farm in Section 7 in Eldorado Township in Traill County [1927 map, below], They moved to a homestead located two miles northwest of Taft, which is about 4 miles north of Hillsboro, ND. They raised their children on their family farm.
In March 1939, Wolfgang Jr. and Caroline moved to a farm west of Reynolds, ND. Sadly, two months later, on 20 May 1939, age 75, Wolfgang Schreiner Jr. died of a heart attack at the home of his son Francis Schriener who farmed west of Reynolds [news & obituary, Hillsboro Banner, 26 May & 2 June 1939, below]. After funeral services held at the Catholic church in Reynolds, Wolfgang was buried at the Catholic cemetery located just west of Reynolds [grave site monument & marker photos, below].
After Wolfgang's passing, Caroline remained on their farm west of Reynolds, but sadly after living there for only 11 months, Caroline (Beitz) Schreiner passed away, age 66, on 13 February 1940 [ND Death Certif., below, and obituary, Hillsboro Banner, 16 Feb. 1940, below]. After funeral services held at the Catholic church in Reynolds, Caroline was buried next to Wolfgang at the Catholic cemetery west of Reynolds [grave-marker photo, below].
As documented earlier, Wolfgang and Caroline (Beitz) Schriener had eight children who lived to adulthood (see Family Register page). Significantly, many of these children remained in Traill County and married others in the community. For example, their oldest son, Edmund Schreiner married Mary Rohman while their oldest daughter Mary Schreiner married Walter Rohman. Further, there were a number of cross-family marriages: Albert Schreiner married Veronica Adams, Theresia Schreiner married Lawrence Adams, and Ida Schreiner married John Adams.Acquisition
