Scope and Content

Letter from Joseph Futey to his family "Warren, Ohio Nov. 21, 1945 Dear Folks: Got your letter to day after show (This means after eating). The Navy is a fine place and we have a lot of fun at times. I was glad to hear that some more boys are coming here from Warren but I am afraid that we might no see them because there are boys coming from all over the U.S. The boy paid me back on the train. You don't have to worry about money here because you just buy candy and stuff like that. Things are cheap here candy is 3¢, cig 12¢ & ... everything is tax free. I lost my comb on the train and I don't have one yet and I will not need one for a while because they give you a short hair cur in about 1 minute and you ought to see how some of them look. Chuck Burch said he liked the Navy very well. We do everything together he is my right hand man. Write the address the way it is on the envelope of this letter. Its nothing to getting up in the morning. One day we got two shots and a vaccination We went to bed at 9:30 got up at 11:30 to do gaurd duty til 4:00 in the morning went to sleep til 5:30, and I felt purty good all day yesterday I was on from 8 to 12 at night. I am in the Navy for the duration which means that after the war they ... Keep you for months if you are needed. I am either going to learn to be a draftsman or a carpenter but we have to take a test for that later on. We sleep in hammocks here and when I was on gaurd duty I had to laugh watching them fall out of them. Some of the boys would stay on the floor then I had to wake them up and if they kick there blanket off I had to pick it up and cover them. We got about $60 worth of clothes already and still got some coming. We don't pay for them we still get our $50. yet. I would either send some home or we can sign a money order to our self so that when we need money for an emergency like going home. I don't know who that girl is but you can give her the address because I would like to get mail from somebody. I think she is Anna Barnes, the girl I use to work by at the Packard. I sent a card to Johnny and Kate about 5 minutes ago. We have to clean the barrack morning, noon, and night. We had inspection to day and we did very well. We start at 5:30 and quit at 4:30 then we have free time until 8:00. I don't miss anything from around Warren especially the Hicks. I am with a cheerful bunch of fellows that act there age. Well this is all I have to say. So long, Joe."
