Scope and Content

Letter from Joseph Futey to his family. "Nov. 24, 1942 Dear Mom, Dad and rest of the family I am feeling fine and I hope you are the same. I don't have to do anything for a while, so I thought I would write. Yesterday it rained for a while so we didn't do much. We got $5.00 dollars yesterday and no sooner we got they got it back because we got some small store which included shaving cream and razor blades, shoe polish, blue jackets manual, soap box and soap. Sunday we went to church there was about 700 boys at that mass. It was held in the gym. the alter is inclosed during the week so that we didn't know that the Church was there until we went in Sunday. the Mass lasted about one hour and we had to sit most of the time. Chuck and I are planning on going to confession Saturday. Sunday we didn't do anything but read the Sunday paper and listen to the radio. We bought a radio. each one chipped in 50 cents apiece. We drilled yesterday and today for about 2 hrs. I think we are going to get another shot today or tomorrow. I had to get up at 3:30 in the morning to do guard duty until 8:00 in the morning. Last week we went to a boxing show, it was very good but we didn't figure on going to it, but the commanding Officer said we had to go. I washed my clothes Saturday night. Boy that is one thing I hate to do, but I got the clothes white as snow. We change underwear everyday and we have to take a shower everyday. My hair is growing fast, so hurry and send me a comb. Our sea bags are filled and to look at the size of the bag you wouldn't think you would put anything in them. They are about 3 feet long and about 1 1/2 feet wide I don't have much to say, so I will close now. The mail just came in Your son, Joe"
