Letter from Joseph Futey to his sister Mary Ann Futey
"March 20, 1945
U.S.S. Pensacola
Der Sister Mary,
Just a few lines to let you know
that I have received your card letters and
was happy to hear from you. I am feeling
fine and I hope that my letter will find
you the same.
Oh! I've still be reading my
Psychology course but lately my time
has been spent on my second class course.
I was all set to go up this month but
my division officer told me I'd have to
wait another month or two before he'll
let me go up. I talked to the chief about
it and he said that there was no reason for
my not being ale to go up this month.
So from the looks of things I must have
done something which he didn't like so for
a punishment he's holding me up from
going up this month. All I can say is that
if I have to wait another month or more
well all I can do is wait. If by that
time I'm closer to a transfer, I won't go
up so only time will tell.
the two fellows that who are the ones
I usually chum around with are Lounsberry
and Kemp or cowboy. Lounsberry hails from
Detroit and Jim comes from Texas. Tex is
somewhat a mister five by five and a great
guy. Speaking of somebody being a mister
five by five the fellows tell me if I don't
stop eating, I'll be one. To me it doesn't
seem as if I'm putting any weight on.
The censorship regulations have been
changed quite a bit so now it won't be
so very hard to think of something to write
about. We can now tell you people of the
engagements we have been in. some of the
ones I took part in are Tonawa, Majito, _____
Tora, Zaik, Marins, Wake, Iwa Jima, Ha Ha
Jima, Chi Chi Jima, Matswa, Kirrabu, and
_____. I've been to Siapan, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii,
Ulithi, Eniwetok, Attu, and Adak.
Now if you have any questions on
your mind I'll be happy to answer them
for you.
Well Sis, I guess this is all for now.
God Bless you.
Your Brother
Joe
