A Gustavus, Ohio plate depicting the First Centralized School, Barclay District School, Present Gustavus School (1912), the Academy (1844), Town Hall (1892), Methodist Church (1856), and Congregational Chruch(1854).
On the back, the following information appears,
'Gustavus was named for the surveyor's son, Gustavus
Storrs. The first cabin was built in 1802. The first public
school was held in 1808 in a log barn. In 1813 the first school
house was built. The Academy was used for the public high
school in the 1890's. Classes were held in the Town Hall
After the Academy was declared unsafe. In 1898 Gustavus
became the first school in the USA to centralize. A gym was
added in 1914. In 1960 the present school became part of the
Joseph Badger Local School District, named for the circuit
riding minister who served the Gustavus Church.
