Letter from John Fagan to Horace Stevens addressed "Dear Brother." Letter is dated Brier Creek, 1816Transcription
Brier Creek 23rd Feb. 1816
Dear Brother,
I have just received your letter
of the 17th which I had looked for
the week before. I can inform you
that I have received a letter from Benjee
nearly three weeks ago which gave
but vary little more information than
the one that you saw at Wilkes barre
except some weddings and more ____
expected. But he had still some prospect
of joining us by the first of March
which is near at hand. He had made
propositions to S.T. Strong for settle-
ment he was in hopes he would agree to
according to his request. In our answer
to his we pitched upon Chilacothee
as the place to meet him in case that
he should not come untill the ground
settles.At least leave information
where he could find us if we could not
find employment there or in its visinity.
We finished our work better than a week
ago and are in hopes to be ready to leave
this place by the time we get another
letter from him. If he does not come
till summer which will be two weeks
or more before we get one however.
I may not for I must
get one hundred dollars more yet which
Mr. Rittenhouse has not got.
At any rate we can join you at Pittsburgh
by the first of April and perhaps by the
15th or 20th of March. You had better wait
for us at Pittsburg if you can not find
employment. You may undoubtedly do enough
to pay for your board there till we arrive.
I will give you a part of Benjee's letter
verbatim. He continues this I shall devote this
page to things that concerns us not but to
amuse you. The sleighing has been good
and the weather vary cold untill the two days
past. There has been a vary rappid thaw. The
fields are as naked as in June and the weather
mild. It is the general opinion that Mr
Geer will shortly take a wife but who
will it be you will think at once. And I can
inform you that it is noboddy else than
Miss Pamela Bellemy. Mr. Sherril continues
his visits to Miss P. Bellamy. As for Miss
Spencer you can inform Horrace that she
has patched up an acquaintance or
rather caught within
her net a Mr. Russel, a young man that
is teaching school in this district. Matters
goes on well but how long they will continue
I know not. Miss Margaret Walsy was
married last Sunday evening to a young man
in Middlebury a gold smith by trade it is
said. She has done well. Mr H Painte attends
singing school as does many others not for the
sake of singing
but to walk home with Miss Aspenmore.
The Mr Fieldses are raving mad for the
want of wives. They run headlong
against every lady they meet. I believe
I have slandered enough in this letter so
conclude. Augustus is not ____
Hungtington and will remain there
untill we are readdy to commence our
journey. If you depart from Harrisburg
before we readdy we shall take the
nearest rout. I know of nothing
more to write that will be of any use to you.
Believe me your affectionate brother
Chs. Stevens

N.B. be sure to write again that we
may know where to find you
I had almost forgot to tell you that
we proposed Chilacothee to meet Benjee
but left it at his option to meet us
there or some other place that he would appoint.
CS
I think it will be best for you to remain at
Pittsburg till we arrive if you go before us.
