Letter and envelope to Lucy Larnard of Bazetta Ohio from Lizzie Quigley person of Morgan, O. Hartsgrove written next to the date in letter.
"Hartsgrove September 4th
My Dear old friend Lucy,
It has been a long
long time since I have seen or heard from
you and I have concluded the only sure way
to hear was to write you a letter which I
should have done long ago. I have often thought
about you and that I would write but
it has been delayed from time to time
until to day I find myself with pen in
hand talking to you in this slow way.
when I have so much to say I cant wait
to write out every word. I am well and
enjoying myself tip top and I hope you do too
I dont know whether you are married or not
I presume you are by this time I never can
hear from you. I heard some time ago that
Jane was going to be married. tell her I think
I have got the best husband in the world
and I hope she has too. it will be a year
since I was married the 12th of November
I believe I havent written to you since.
I mean to come down to Bazetta this
fall and stay a week or more if the
folks will keep me. hen I will come
to your house and make a long visit
any way we would have gay times I expect
how is your mothers health I heard it was
very poor last spring. are you at home this
fall the roads are nice now. Lucy has
been home on a visit she says Sally Post
has gone west I would write to her if I knew
her address. will you please write it to me
when you answer this letter. which I hope
you will do soon as convenient. I think
it must seem very lonely to your house since
the death of your sister. and oh how
awful it is to think of this horrible war
and drafting I think is too dreadful + how
... it seems when the boys start
away. some never to return. Welly Bacon went
from here the other night he came to bid us
good bye. he seemed to feel very bad. I felt
sorry for him. for you know he hasent many
friends. they are going right to virginia to bill
old regiments. has any of your folks gone
I am afraid Andrew has gone for
when he last wrote he said he would enlist
before he would be drafted. but I wouldent
if I was a man. for I dont think there is
any honor enough to go around amoungst so
many. I dont have to worry any about Jimmie
for they couldent draft him any way. but all
the women up this way are afraid their
husbands or sons will have to go. if you havent
any you wont have to worry about him
that is one good thing. well it is dinner
time now and i have written everything I can
think of so I guess I better close. now Lucy
write soon to me and I will answer
you. comeup if possible. I shall come down
there as soon as the farm work is done
so I can have a horse. Libbie Q. will come
with me I guess. mother Quigleys name is
Libbie so you see we are all three Libbies
and they all call me Lizzie so you must
direct to Lizzie Quigley. your old friend +
schoolmate. give my love to all the folks"Collection
