Denmark October 29th 1846
Brother Horace,
You may be somewhat surpris-
ed at receiving a letter from me date at
this place but so it is. Shortly after I informed
you that I got imployment by the year,
I returned home to my family and was taking
sick with the chill and fever and since that
time I have been confined one half of the time to my bed and the balance of the time only able to be about the house. My wife, Charles, and Mary were also taking about the same time that I was with the same deseas and have been sick ever since the midle of July. Sarah and Mary
have got well and myself and Charles have got our deseas changed from the chill and fever to the old fashion shakeing again and have it every day, and god only knows when we shall get over it. I have had it broke up several times with Quinine but it appears to do know good.
I received a letter from Brother Charles some two or three weeks ago and he informed me that
Susan had lost one of her twin children and
that John & Susan and her children were all
sick, also that uncle Benjamin, uncle Augustus, and uncle Horace and his family were all sick [?]. I was sorry to hear but it was in know ways unexpectted to me for as far as I have herd it
has been as sickley in one place as another allover the state.
I have herd of several deaths of the Bucyrus volunteers that listet for the Mexican War.
John Stamper, David Nichols, and Walles, and some others (died with fevers).
Horace, I have only to add in my letter
that owing to my sickness and that of my family
and being out of a shop to manage myself
winter is going to cetch me in very destitute
circumstances. I am sory to say so, but such
is the fact, and I can not help but I must
try and live as long as I can and suport my family.
I am not able to do the first thing at present
and I know not whether I shall be able
to do anything all winter or not.
I think that I am excusable for non writing
to you sooner. I wish you to answer this
letter immediately and direct your letter
