Letter to John H. Evans, Bondysburg Geauga County Ohio, from Uriah Evans, Gallipolis OH "Mr. John H. Evans Bondsburg Geauga Co Ohio Gallipolis Sunday afternoon Novem 1st 1846 Dear brother. Yours of the 19th of Oct is before me. I can say as in my last that by the blessing of divine Providence. I am enjoying good health and have been throughout the Seasons so far. While I have been surrounded with sickness on all sides- this having been a remarkably sickly year. not only here but almost every where else so far as I can learn. you advert in your letter to my letter to Samuel as being rather severe and not aplicable to you. Well John, I have onnly one thing to say in reply, that you may be entirely free from Censure and the fact of my being almost entirely cheated out of the mare by the _____ neglect of some one I hardly know I felt myself wronged and my own relations too. I thought it probable Thomas had made a contract with you to keep her until his return etc, that mare was of an excellent stock, celebrated for running and praised highly here I was offered $55. for her without the riging which cost me something like $18. I let Thomas have her as a mater of accomo- dation as he had been to see me and wished to pass through in terior of the State to visit our Commisions on the route, and at the end of his journey after recruiting her a little he was authorized to sell her and forward the money after paying Clark. Thomas paid me $15. and you say sold saddle bridle martingale whip & foot maintains to Mrs Brut this would about indemnify him for the money paid, and this was all he cared for, this treatment coupled with the insolent lett er received from Daniel when Administrator of the estate saying there was something due from me which was only $20. and yet a bed of mine costing me $35 was used and worn out by the family and nothing said about it, by some misterious slight of hand or jugling my fathers estate was squandered and kept in profound secret from me. even the whereabouts of most of my relatives is now, and always has been kept a secret amongst you. I never know Phelps broke up my father until informed by a stranger here. can you wonder that I don't come to make you all a visit. I have been here some 10 years, and if ever I would leave here I would may not see each other for years to come at all events I cannot tell when I can visit the Reserve write as often as you can and let me know how you are getting along - please accept of my best wishes for yourself and wife yours affectionately John H. Evans Uriah Evans"
