Letter to Jean Law from Nicky Renato
"Somewhere in the Marianas
"On the Road to Tokyo"
Thursday
22 March 45
Hi Jeanie (If I may),
I must confess your letter did just about knock
me over. At first I had no idea who it was from. It
was sure nice to know that you're okay.
Your little man will soon be ready to go to school.
I sure would like to see him now. Russ would probably
like to be back there with his wife and boy. You sure
think a lot about those things when there are so
many miles between.
Well, I'm stationed here at an Air Field. We are part
of the Twentieth Air Force. I suppose the newspapers
have been giving you the low down on our B-29's.
They have been very busy for the past two weeks.
Since the boys took Iwo Jima we can rest pretty easy.
That's the Island that the Jap bombers were coming from
to give us a raid now and then. I'm afraid they will
have a pretty rough time getting at us now.
Our Island in sections is starting to look a little
more civilized now. The jungle on this side has been
cleared away. Things certainly have changed since the
day we landed six months ago.
The weather here never changes. It's like spring all
year round. Some days it rains in intervals of
fifteen minutes from morning to night. I guess we
can't kick to much though since we are on the best
Island in the Group.
Time to sign off so tell all I said hello.
As Always,
