Letter from W.B. Lloyd to Horace Stevens, 1839
"Cleveland June 12th 1839
Horace Stevens Esq
Dear Sir
I am at in condition at present
to buy you the amount of the note you hold against
me & which has been sometime due nor is it probable
that I shall be for a long time in such situations as
to warrant my buying it, indebted as I am to others &
unavailable as my means are at present. Had my judgment
been consulted a settlement such as was made in behalf
of our company should never have been made. The term was
too severe for my task. Still I was unwilling to throw
any obstacle in the way of any arrangement which
others thought ____ to the preservation of their
credit. I look upon the note you hold against me as
given almost without consideration at least of benefit
to me o rothers & certainly do no tfeel willing to prefer
it to debt previously contracted. _____ notwithstanding this
I will do the best I can with you. I propose to turn you
out a horse & sulky I have in my possession for about
$100 to $150. The horse is a good one, the sulky old
and much worn but worth something. If they suit
your views I am willing to let them go partly towards
the note. The balance to be paid at convenience
Respectfully yours
Wm B Lloyd"Location
