Letter in the Horace Stevens Collection to a teacher? Signed "Jonathan."
"Who doesn't like to travel. I don't think
their is many say they don't . traveling in
cars is very pleasant but you can not see the towns
and villages which you pass quite as well as you can when
on a boat & believe they are inventing balloons to
cary people from one place to another but for my part
I think it is a rather dangerous way for traveling.
A short time ago I was traveling. I was just
returning from Europe where I had been to claim
some money whitch had been left me by one of
my relations. Well I was just ready to take the
car at New York when a gentleman came up to
me and said that they are over run with passeng-
ers now and said he could not take me. So I went
back to the Hotel thinking that I would make
the best of it. I had not been seated 5 minutes
when the same gentleman came back to me and said
that I could go but he would have to put
off a little girl whom he had promised to take as far as
Buffalo but she was too poor to pay and he would
rather take me than her though I suppose he thought
he would get a little money if he took me but
he did not say. so I told him that I had made
up my mind to stay. The next day I took the
train and soon found my self started for home
I arrived safely home the next day.
Yours Respectfully
Jonathan"
