Scope and Content

Letter addressed to "Dear friend" "Mecca, Nov 21st 1863 Ever Dear Friend After a delay of some weeks I embrace the opportunity offered to reply to your very welcome letter, excuse my delay to reply very soon as I am from home & I prize letters from friends at their full value. You see by the heading I am in Mecca this winter teaching as usual - have taught two weeks. am in hopes to have a pleasant school have only taught two weeks pupils have not all commenced coming yet, so I feel as if I knew - but little what my winter labors were to be, one thing I do know I have a pleasant place to make my home at. Aunt has a pair of lively girls they are real good companions went home last Sat. had not been at home long when Uncle Thomas came to spend a week he is well lives to Salmons Oh! Millie Cousin May has a little daughter ten days old, considerable of a family two daughters & a son - the oldest is real pretty & smart. the boy is not good looking, is cross-eyed, but he is a smart caring little fellow. I helped cousin to sew a no of weeks this fall, I learned to have the little fellow, I rrealy thought him pretty he is so good. Uncle says the baby look like aunt Cinda Salman make a right good man, he has some particularities that I would not like but I am getting old & sentimental so that balances the smaller, they have every thing that heart could wish, in my estimation cousin Thomas talks of coming out to spent a month or two this winter. he is improving his farm building etc. he is dealing in sheep I believe he still live in town has a man living in his place I wonder if he ever will marry? Mr. Pratt has sold out, he sold to a man from Troy, Ohio. His housekeeper has left him, I did not learn the reason, he some trouble to get along, since he & Linda parted. when he sold he went over to have her sign the deed (Esq. Barnes of course went with him) Pratt would not go within 3 or 4 miles of where he lived. when Barnes got there she was abed, she is realy down with the consumption - don't you think Mr. Pratt ought to have some remorse. of conscience when he thinks how that girls prospects have been blighted, he holds his head as high as ever & seems to think he has done nothing out of the way. Phoebe has given you so much better description of people & things that I am at a loss to kno what to write. Phoebe has not come yet she has taken a music class I can't think of the name of the place. Its within 18 miles of Warren, she sent for her clothes I want you to give me a description of Phoebe while there & tell me if she said any- thing about my particular gentleman, tell me the name her people do not like it - her staying away. Well Millie what do you think about this awful War coming to a close - this winter, me thinks I hear you say not much prospect, too many are ready to join in chorus, how many brave boys must get fall time only can tell, Harry. Paterage was wounded in the battle of Cheamanga the last news we had from him he had consented to have his arm taken off. he was a noble young man. Excuse this hastily written letter & reply immediately. Your friend Susan"
