Scope and Content

Letter addressed to "Ever Valued friend" Mecca, Jan 17th 1864 Ever Valued friend When I spoke of writing I was not aware that I could not be supplied with a better pen, but such as it is I shall use, we will lay it to the war having such poor worn out pens. this one is worn until tis fully an inch across the “neb.” If I do ½ my duty, to begin with I’ll say thank you mam for that good long letter you wrote me last. What awful! awful– cold weather we had in the beginni- ng of the year, ‘twas all people could do to keep from freezing. our people had a few freinds invited for New Years evening, and most all came we were more disappointed to have [?] come than we could have been had not one have come. tis spoken of as being one of the coldest times ever known in Ohio. there was not the least cessation in the weather until the 11th day. did not have any great amount of snow Salmons people have three children. the babe is real pretty Thommas brought cousin a splendid hood trimmed with fur & furs for Elora, useful presents. Mary Ann she that lived at your house is well & he says the girls are as large as any body quite smart & he calls them girls fair looking. When you write ask lots of questions & I’ll try to answer. Let me hear from you right suddenly. to attempt an apology would male a bad matter worse Good night Do you remember Jay Bruck he used to go to school in Gustavus. I heard him preach to day. he makes a real good speaker. he is in Oberlin graduate. Nathan (his brother) is a s bashful as ever. they boarded themselves in one of Mr. Hezleps old hoses. I am teaching in the district where they live, have taught ten weeks, so have but 6 more to teach Sex St. John died 15th. consumption marked him for its victim. he leaves two fine little orphan boys. he died at his fathers. Mrs William Shipman had another apologetic shock last sunday and died tuesday. she suffered a great deal in this world, but we have every reason to believe she is gone to enjoy an eternity of bliss at Gods right hand. Mr. Rufus Kelly lives but a little ways from here. he came after me last friday night. I went home with him & spent the evening very pleasantly they had a letter for Edgar that day. he was well. has been in 5 battles is a member of the 105th the Captain of their co was home on a short furlough through the holydays. he speaks very highly of Edgar as a soldier. they are going to live on Mr. Selbys farm next year. she is a good cheese & real nice housekeeper. Rufus sent his respects to your people. Edmond has had a severe run of lung fever, is not able to be out any yet Phebe has been home but whether she is now or not I do not know, as I have been at home but little this winter & did not think to inquire about her when I was home. L Peltow & U. Gardner were arrested for pressing counterfeit money about 10 days ago. they were in jail in Cleveland but are bailed out. Mr Peltow has been doing a heavy business in furnishing substitutes & filling out quotas for several towns Our people are in usual health. Mothers health is quite good Uncle James Brader died the latter part of Dec how very much he suffered. Milly write me tight off. You know procrastination is the thief of time. Remember me kindly to your people & write about all of them Cousin Thommas arrived at Salmons Christmas evening. Cousin had a large party quite a surprise for him. he is not lame any on level ground but either his knee or ankle is stiff. I have not had much opportunity to visit with him yet. I asked him if he called at your house. he said it was in the night when he passed through. when I told him you were not married yet he was sorry he had not called–I told him I was expecting your picture he said he wished I might get it while he was here. cannot you gratify him & me too? He looks as young as he did when he was out before I never saw him in such good spirits as he seems to be he is just as full of fun as he can be he says he is very sure he would make a good family man & do not differ with him in that respect
