Salsbury May 23 1819 Sir, It being on sunday evening I sat down to inclose a few lines to you concerning my journey and other business, I came to painesville and found no wagon, then I went to Mr. Harnon, he said my wagon had not ben moved from Buffalo and he would let me have a wagon to go there, then I gave him his receipt and took Mr. Heacocks and came to Buffalo and found my wagon was gone to painesville + told him I should keep there receipt for the wagon, they said there was a man [?] to painesville and wanted to hire a wagon and he saw that about ten days after we left it and they [?] him. it was Mr. Lawton's, and he said I nowe him very well and all his fammaly and I am going rite where he is and I will take it rite to him and it will be [?] ness to us boath, and they took his receipt for the wagon and have not heard from him since, his name was Charles Bercherd aman whome I never save now heard of before and I presume Mr. Lawton did not neither but that is there look out and not mine all the trouble. I shall have well bee to asertain the worth of it, when I left Buffalo I took an old [?] up there which brought me with in sixty miles of my journeys end, and then it faild me the next day after Mr. Mathews left me, he left me about seventy five miles from my fathers, he left me sooner then he expected, he found he was going out of his way to going farther and I thought I could get along without him, and when my [?] faild I took the stage and sent James with the horses, I arrived here in twenty days after I set out includeing all my bad luck and bad weather and bad going, and if I had not had anny bad luck thirty dollars would have bought me here, but [???] I want to no what I have not heard any thing from them since I left them, I was sensible, I did not [?] they had ought to ben weighed and delivered to Mr. Gorden, but Mr. Harnon told me it would make no difference he would receipt them to Mr. Gorden and he could enclose the receipt in a letter to me, and he thought it was likely the letter would be at the falls before I should, for Mr. Gorden said his teem would start the next day after I left there, and had I known as much about my business when I was there as I do not I never should have left that place, my to last letters that I had before I came away from there almost Deprived me of my sense, the one from Livy and the other from my father, and my business at Mr. Webs I expected I should loos everything I had, and if I should not have my health I would come uppon the town and that was more than I could have, but since I came here I have received a letter from Mr. Hoffnagle, he says he never shall [?] me about that business, and I thought so some times myself and if it had not been for some peticular advice I had from some of the leading characters in that place I should stayd as it was, but I thought if my situation should become despicable I should have but little mercy shewn me, for he was warned of it in season they would of course say, but my fiends were quite overjoid to have me return [?] It affords me a great deal of pleashure to think I am with them, but at the same time I feel as tho I had done wrong in coming away from there, but I have got rid of Franklyn which was almost as bad as all the rest of my troubles for his conduct was such that he was no comfort to me no no- body els, I over took him at [?]. I told him I did not want him to go with me, he said he should go with the wagon, but he saw to men that he thought was after him and he left me at elk wick and I have not seen him sinse, and you may give my compliments to Doct [?] and tell him I have riten to his Brothers concerning his business in warren and that I have [?] to pay him if they would not. I wrote to them that he talked of going to vermont and then he would call for his [?] and [????] [?] has made his choice in warren on if he is agoing to Nyack this season for I feel very anxious to na. I am in hopes to see him if he goes there. I had rather pay you for your time and trouble then not to see you. if you do go when you get to [?] you can come through Salsbury and it will bee but very little out of the way, we live one mile and a half north of the meeting house, about fifty rods from Doct Todds and I hope you will take the trouble to write to me so that I shall no what time to look for you [?] you must write what you are all buising [busying] your selves about in warren this spring and what has takin place new since I left there and who you have got to keep house for I expect you have more time to write then Novack has, for I expect he in imployd [employed] in the caves of [?] or soon will bee, I feel [?] anxious to hear from there, There is not one day but what I think of the people in Warren. [?] says. I do want to see [?] and gustus and go to Mr. Eleses and Emily says if I was in Warren I would not bee here again. They feel very anxious to heard from there mates. Jarvis says if he lives a few years longer he shall see Warren again. I must leave writing or I shall [?] your patience reading it so that you never will wish me to write again. Give my love to all [?] of my friends, my children send [?] full of love to you all and there mates likewise so I remain your friend and well wishes. Martha Lawton N.B. tell Mr. Bosworth if you pleas that I had to make too dollars and fifty cents discount on the meedville money he let me have and seventy five cents on the alexandra bill and I could not chang it one by at the brokers office in Buffalo and I presume he is gentle- man enough to mak it up to me for I sold him the horse very cheap and he was to pay me good money. That would answer my purpose here and in our settlement there [?] of cards that was forgot if he will acount to Mr. garden [?] amount. It will answer my purpose as well as the money for the use of the wagon. Samuel Mell Mr. Horace Stevens Warren [?] [?] my County of Trumble May 26 and state of Ohio
