Gustavus Feb 31st
My dear Seneca,
If you get a letter
this week will have to commence
it tonight. I am glad to say
we are better. Elmer has really im-
proved for the last two days. He
is yelling so he can eat some.
He has had quite a severe time
and looks as tho he had been
sick. Has been very yellow from
head to foot. had the Dr. up
twice. he thinks the disease has
been hanging about him for
sometime. Thinks now he will
be able to go to school next
week. I am feeling better, have
not been able to do but very
little for two weeks as work.
Nellie comes up Thurs. then with
your fathers and the boys help
we get along. She made some
pies then she and I together made
fried cakes. Got some good ones
they say. Will you have one?
Had oysters for supper. They were
fine. Harry came up and went
home with Nellie, and Frank Walton
came up to see Elmer. So it is almost
bed time now. Papa drove down
to the center this morning. Dr
Leiler was in the store, and [?]
French and he were riding aro-
und the center yesterday noon
and report was that they were
out until two O’clock this morn
and [?] was laid up in bed,
drunk, sick, and Ella went over
to Darr’s crying, telling them
all about it. Said he was lying
then as if he was dead, and
she was afraid he was dead.
I think it was growing worse all
the time, and I do hope they
will do something about it.
Frank says they say Alberta
says. If she cannot have the
Dr. she will not have anyone,
poor fool. No one else wants her.
Fri. PM. We call it a pretty cold
day. Elmer is studying. I’ve been
trying to get him to write some
to you. He says he can’t. He has
got nothing to write. Thinks he
cannot write a letter.
Literary tonight. Wilsons and
Trumens are going to go with
the sled and take the neighbors
up and down the street. Wouldent
wonder if they would be wanting
their father to go along for drives.
It is so cold. Tues night, the
boys were invited down to [?].
Mary and her school and some
of the young people there came
over. They invited Julia also. They
had big times. They got supper. Had
oysters, cake, biscuit and coffee. He
stayed until One O’clock.
Report says Ruf Johnstons are
coming back to Gustavus this spring.
Pattie is teaching this winter some-
where near there. I do hope you
will keep well. Have you got you
something to wear around your
neck? You must have your throat
and chest protected when you
go off very far. Wonder if you
will go to Troy this week.
Carl Sheldon is going where Nate
is goes next week. They say he does
not want to go. Nate wrote he could
get him a place were he could
get $50 a month. They say Nate
gets $90. Herbert has stopped going
to school. Has back ache. the boys
say to lazy to study.
A young [?] from Greene
shot himself twice in the head last
sunday. One ball did not enter his
head. The other did. Did not hit
the brain. Was alive yesterday, but thought
he could not live. He doesn’t
want to live.
A letter from Aunt [?]. Says she
thought Seneca would write again.
She is riding in sleighs all the time.
Well I must go and start supper. It
is three O’clock and there will be
some boys coming soon. Going
to kill the beef and other pig. The
first of the week. Then we will have
something to eat, I hope.
Boys have come, supper cooking.
Going to have mashed potatoes,
fried pork, bread, and butter, fried cakes, [?]
no [?] news only excited about
going to Literacy.
I have fixed a loop for your
coat. Just sew it on at each end.
Sew it so it will not tear the
lining, but dont sew into the outside.
How does the new collar do. Does
it fit all right? I do hope
you are warm and comfortable.
Elmer say tell you Wilson
is going to take his children
in the bob sleds. His family has
increased until he cannot take
it in a single rig. Think he
will get pretty cold. Mary Wilburn
is home now. Grant and Case
were both away last week.
Tis getting dusk. I will say
good night for this time.
If you go to Troy, will not
get your letter until tuesday.
Go when you can but be
careful about getting cold.
Lots of love for my boy
