My dear boy,
Your letter we read last
night. Was not really looking for
it as we thought you would
be in Troy. Just as glad though
to get it and glad to hear you
were well. What a stormy time
we have had. Good sleighing they
say. Tho I have not had a sleigh
ride yet. Have hardly been out
of the house since four weeks ago
last sunday. Elmer started for
school yesterday. He looks poor
and is not very strong but says
he feels all right. he helps about
the chores; and eats well now.
we are having buckwheat
cakes now. They are pretty good.
2.
Sunday Elmer and his father went
to church [sunday]. Mr & Mrs Whist[??]
and Alex and Mistee were here
for dinner. What do you think
Alex & Mistee are going to do. Well
they are going to take care of
old Freddie Lewis. he made him
a big offer. he takes the farm.
has two fifths ⅖, of what is made
Fred furnishes farming tools, horses
cows. Their living(?) all but the
groceries. he helps milk besides and
this other work. if they should agree
and they stay as long as he
lives he would do something
more for them. Papa told him
where he told him of F's offer. he
had better by all means take him
up. we did not think Mistee
would consent to go. but she
said she was willing to go. Mr
Me - hates to give him up. but
told him. it was so good an
offer, he would let him off.
On the side [Thurs morn. all well, got them all filled up with [pank?] cukes.
3.
Elmer is [???]ting a new overcoat
to buy. Wilsons coat has just
about gone, it never was very
good. we thought best to get
the new one for E - as his was
getting a little small. we was
in hope Wilsons would last him
but it is just falling to pieces
The new one is a shade of brown
something the color of his hat
only darker. very pretty a $11.00
cost. Got it for $8.
Wilsons has the money for you
for those C.E. cards. We will try
to get it in shape to send. have
you one of cards: if you have
not, we will get one and send
you. If the weather is not to
severe they are going to kill
the beef and old pig tomorrow
then we will grow fat, wish
you could be home to have
some the fresh meat. Do you still
have good board, and do you
like the place, are there any
ladies boards there
4.
Truman is teaching school
now he is delivering lectures. you
can imagine the attitude of the
Proff. Wed. eve. A nice winter
day Mrs Beirs helped Papy butcher
to buy. This eve he has taken one
half of the pig and one quarter
of the beef down to Gates. also
the hide and seven chickens. All
amounting to nearly $25. Nellie
been up helping me to day instead
of tomorrow. Mrs Whist[???] coming
up to help try lard and make
sausage, aint she kind. O if I
could only do as I used to.
To night Dwight Giddens and
Annie Tate are to be married. we
read in last weeks Chronicle
that Alice Benton and Eddie Root
of east Mecca were married. did
they not both go to school to
you? Papa has not seen Mr. Shipman
yet. Will tomorrow night as it is
Grange night. Grant is to deliver
one of his lectures.
