Scope and Content

Letter from Ruth Partridge to Mabel Baker Smallwood, July 25, 1953 "Miss Ruth Partridge 1529 East Market Street Warren, Ohio July 25, 1952 Dear Mabel, I have checked the pictures in the family. We have no picture any older. We have put in ours. It does show the cap and the stripes on the arm. We have grandfather Ohl's manual of arms. On the fly leaf, in his writing, it reads: "E.J. Ohl, Lieut. Co K - 196 O.V.I. (Ohio Volunteer Infantry) Baltimore, MD 1865" He served two short terms from Ohio and one from Indiana In the Roster of Ohio Soldiers 1861-1865, p. 207 It reads: "Eli J. Ohl, private age 20, entered March 1, 1865 - 1 year Co. A, 196th - promoted to 2'd Lieut. Co. K March 25, 1865." On p. 219 - I find: Eli J Ohl 2'd Lieut, age 20, March 25, 1865, 1 year mustered out Baltimore, MD. Sept 11, 1865 Co. K. 196 Regiment, Mustered in camp Chase, Ohio. p. 53 Ohl genealogy Fort Wayne, Ind. Co. A 30th Ind. Volunteer Inf.; discharged 9-29-1864; he helped form Co. A. 196 Ohio Volunteer Infantry enlisting March - 1865 - transferred to Co. K., on March 25, 1865 Brema Col. of 10th O.N.G. in 1880 I have made several trips and phone calls to Traxells. I think they have a later picture than ours, a big framed picture, but so far I haven't been able to even see it. I went down to Aunt Lottie's and her pictures are no older than ours and not in uniform. Since he was 15-18 in Indian Service and 20-21 in Ohio he wouldn't look very old anyway. The old uniform perished from moths according to Aunt Lottie. Aunt Nell has the sword, but I could not get a peek at it. He had a blue coat, gray trousers with a blue stripe down the side, gold buttons, a blue cap. We don't know what the Indiana uniform looked like. We only know about the Ohio. The sword was long, silver colored, and looked like this (drawing of a sword) They had odd handles. It hung from a belt. Mother thinks his O.N.G. sword was gold. Not Aunt Lottie, who owned the uniform, insists the stripe on the pants was blue, but all pictures I can find in color of Civil War uniforms carry a red stripe on the pants and red stripe on the sleeve so I don't know for sure of course. I have made two trips to Niles, and I think I have no other information to give you. If there is anymore, I could not get it. There is a watch which was presented by O.N.G. (Ohio National Guard) to him after he became a colonel He had a full dress uniform with a cape for that we think and carried a gold sword. We think Aunt Nell once had this uniform. I put my picture in with yours and mailed them to you. Send ours back when you're finished. Love, Ruth"
