Description

The Mississippi House in Shaws Flat as it appeared in the 1920's. At that time it was and had been a roadside business on the west side of State Highway Route No. 49. A distinct contrast in mode and change of travel is shown by the ox yoke, the riding saddle, the old time visible bowl gasoline pump and engine oil barrels fronting the building. The State Highway then continued north from Washington Street, passed Sonora High, up Saratoga Road, thru Shaws Flat and on to Mr. Brow. During the 1930's the section of Route 49 between Mt. Brow and Pedro Wye was constructed and that portion of 49 then re-routed from the north end of Washington Street, out Columbia Way to the City limits and then over the Columbia Road to Pedro Wye. Later changes were made which brought the State Highway into north Sonora adjacent to the present location of Vic's Chevron Service Station.
